There are two primer choices: oil-based or latex-based. Choose an oil-based primer for durability and adhesion, but prepare for extra dry time and more VOC (volatile organic compounds) fumes. Or, pick a stain-blocking latex primer. They’re easy to apply, clean up, and affordable.

When considering whether to paint your house yourself, weigh two major factors. One is time. The larger your home, the more time and energy you'll spend painting it to ensure a quality result that you're satisfied with. Safety is the other, especially when painting a multi-story home exterior. If the job requires ladders or leaning out of windows, protect yourself by hiring a pro.

Matching new paint with an old, faded color can be tricky. First, you’ll need to determine whether the paint on your house is latex-based or oil-based.
