Livestock and Equine fence design and installation. I started building high tensile fence in the early 1990's when we took over the area as a Gallagher dealer. I have since learned a lot about what works and what doesn't, what is good quality and what is junk. When Gallagher discontinued insultimber I searched for a replacement. The replacement I found was the PasturePro composite post. I now use CCA treated posts for corner and end braces, as well as anywhere there is a dip/rise/bend in the fence. Everywhere else I use the PasturePro posts.

The bottom strand should sit between 12 to 15 inches from the ground. If you have a problem with small critters, you can aim for 8 inches. Three-strand fences should be 16 to 19 inches apart, four-strand fences should be 10 to 12 inches apart, and five-strand fences should be 8 and 10 inches apart.

Some types of snow fences may work for keeping Fido in your yard. The openings can be small enough to prevent a dog from escaping. However, you want to make sure the openings aren’t susceptible for them to get stuck. While some types may contain the pup, the fence will require regular inspection and maintenance. It’s best to discuss which type of snow fence is ideal for your needs with a pro.

Ideally, when you replace a fence post, you should also replace the concrete footing. The concrete bonds to your new post, creating a secure base. If you install a new post into old concrete, it won’t be as sturdy.

That said, it is possible. Sometimes the post will lift right out of the concrete. If not, you can use a high-lift car jack to try and lift the pole out of the footing. Put the new post into the same hole and backfill it with fast-setting concrete. Keep in mind, this won’t work well for metal posts.

If you want to keep those critters out, it helps to put a fence around your vegetable garden that’s at least a couple of feet tall to deter any animals from getting past it.
