"I would rate Scott E. Anderson Painting and Wallpaper Hanging higher than 5, if i could, on value for money. Scott and Dennis are terrific. They arrived when they said they would. They tidied up each day. We hired Scott to remove wallpaper and prep the walls for paint or new paper. Scott was very helpful with advice for components of the project we are going to do on our own. The project included paper removal, plaster repair/patch, and prep for three rooms in the 1804 portion of our house. In the 1985 portion of the house, paper was removed in a bedroom, two bathrooms, and a den. Dents, dings, and holes were repaired, and the walls prepped for paint or paper, here as well. Near the end of the project we negotiated with Scott to paint a bathroom, not in the original project scope. During the project, my husband had a medical emergency. Scott and Dennis were able to continue working to ensure the project was completed on time. We didn't have Scott paint or paper any of the rooms stripped because we only recently purchased the home and have not made decisions on color or paper. The first task was to get the old paper off and out! We are very pleased with the results. We will use Scott again. We highly recommend Scott E. Anderson Painting and Wallpaper Hanging."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can apply peel-and-stick wallpaper over wood paneling, but it requires significant preparation for a good result. Peel-and-stick wallpaper has a weaker adhesive than traditional wallpaper and works best on smooth, non-textured surfaces like painted or primed drywall. Because wood paneling is often textured with grooves, any flaws in the underlying surface will likely be visible after application. To prepare the paneling, you must ensure the surface is free of cracks, holes, and protrusions by filling any indentations and sanding rough spots to create a smooth surface. An alternative is to remove the paneling and apply the wallpaper directly to the underlying drywall or plaster, provided it is in good condition.

Hiring a professional wallpaper hanger is usually a worthwhile idea because, while the application of wallpaper itself is easy, getting the finished product to look good is complicated and takes a lot of practice and patience. A professional wallpaper hanger will not only be able to hang your wallpaper seamlessly, but they will also get an even application of wallpaper paste to avoid bubbling and imperfections immediately and over time. Plus, they can provide their professional opinion on whether to remove or wallpaper over an existing layer of wallpaper.

The two most common reasons wallpaper does not stick are a lack of preparation and improper adhesive. Be sure to use the wallpaper paste designed for the type of paper you choose. Before beginning your project, make sure the walls are clean and free of dust, grease, and oils.

Yes, peel-and-stick wallpaper is available that’s made from vinyl—it actually is the most common material used in peel-and-stick wallpaper. Learning how to install vinyl wallpaper is far easier when you’re using a peel-and-stick design than with adhesive. You could also select peel-and-stick wallpaper that consists of paper, polyester, or natural fibers.

Installation typically takes 1-2 weeks, depending on the wall’s size and site conditions.
