"I signed a contract on the first week of June to have PIC Home ?Pros? remodel 3 bathrooms. They stayed for a week in the middle of September, and stopped coming, leaving a vanity in one bathroom, and a shower door in another bathroom completely uninstalled. On the last day here, I was told shower door still has not been manufactured yet, but would take a couple of weeks. They told me that it would cost $150 to have them come back to finish installation, even though contract was for them to complete the work. They ignored my emails to them, so after waiting for 3 weeks and receiving response to my email, I called them, and was told that the shower door is not ready, and even though it?s been 4 months since it was supposed to be ordered, there is still no ETA. I asked that they come back to install the vanity, since we still have no sink in one bathroom. I was told that would cost another $650 to come back and install it. They will work until they are paid in full, then abandon you. "

Most building codes require handrails on stairways with four or more risers or individual steps. Handrails are not often required on a staircase with three or fewer steps, but local building codes or other regulations may still require them. Some homeowners also prefer handrails on three or fewer risers for comfort, insurance, or mobility reasons.

While they sound similar, handrails and guardrails serve different purposes. A handrail is the part of the railing you grip for balance and support while walking up or down stairs. A guardrail, on the other hand, is a safety barrier designed to prevent falls from elevated platforms such as balconies, decks, or stair landings. A single rail system may serve both functions in some staircases, but code requirements can differ for each.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

Building codes require deck railing spindles or balusters to be spaced no more than four inches apart. This is to prevent small children or pets from slipping between the railings and falling off the deck. For the same reason, the railings must also be no more than four inches from the deck floor.

Several signs suggest it’s time to replace your stair railing. Look for wobbling or looseness whenever you put any weight on it. Of course, visible cracks, splits, rust, or corrosion often indicate it’s time for a change. Missing or damaged balusters should be replaced, as should any outdated designs that don’t meet current building codes.
