"The crew sent was on time, professional, friendly, efficient, clean and organized. The electrician was the first to arrive and installed the new breakers to the panel and installed the wire for the condenser unit and the wall mounted blowers. The crew installed two power head blowers, one for a large sunroom and another for the living room. The heat pumps are nearly silent yet powerful enough to do the entire first floor of our 3000 sq foot home. The entire install was done in one day and we were thrilled with the result. The estimator who came out took pictures and helped decide what the best options were according to our wishes and needs. This is what this company specializes in and they have it down to a science."

"We have 2 heat pumps which we have serviced every 2 years. I was going to call the company that had installed our heat pumps until a friend told me that Daveâ s Mechanical Maintenance had installed his heat pump and had done a great job. I called Daveâ s and scheduled an appointment for service. Dave Curtis came to our house on the day scheduled and he arrived on time. He was very efficient and cleaned and service both units. One unit had not been functioning at full efficiency but Dave diagnosed and fixed the issue in no time. I highly recommend, if you need service or need a new heat pump installed, calling Daveâ s Mechanical Maintenance. They are efficient, friendly and provide exceptional customer service at a very reasonable price."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

An AC drip pan may stop draining if there’s a clog where the drip pan connects to the drain line. Clogs can form from a lack of cleaning or from rust or corrosion buildup. Cleaning the drip pan at least once per month lowers the chances of debris clogging the drain line.

Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. There is, however, another type of air conditioner called a swamp cooler that requires water to operate. If you have a swamp cooler, you may need to fill a reservoir with water and potentially ice. But a swamp cooler is different from a standard portable AC unit.

If you have central air conditioning, it’s fine to run your AC all day if that’s what you want—as long as the AC unit is in good condition. But if your AC runs constantly when you don’t want it to, there may be a problem with your system (like the ones we’ve mentioned above). Window AC units and wall air conditioners aren’t as powerful as central AC, so you should only run those kinds of air conditioners for eight to 12 hours at a time.

You should plan to change your AC unit's filter every one to three months, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. You should also clean the coils at least once per year, but if you have pets or someone in your household has allergies, you might need to clean them more often. Fortunately, many pros will clean the coils and change the filter for you during an inspection, which you should schedule once or twice per year.

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.
