"Retaining Wall/Walkway- Ben was on time to look at the project and answered any questions or concerns I had. Ben and his crew showed up on the day scheduled and not stop, these men work hard. Very, very happy with the finished product. Ben is very personable and I would hire him again in a heartbeat! Great Job Tracy L. Herbert."

"Everyone at J. Stephan Contracting was great to work with. We got a response very quickly for our initial quote and any questions during the project were addressed very timely and in a professional manner. We had a large retaining wall and fence installed and it took just over a week. The crew was always accommodating to allow us access in and out of the garage (work was next to the driveway), the worked hard and stayed focused on the task while here. If they had adjustments in their schedule based on other projects they would let us know. The end result looks amazing and we continue to get compliments on it. We made some additions to the project as we went and cost estimates and timelines were provided quickly. J. Stephan Contracting also had great follow through - they did everything they said they were going to do; that goes a long way these days!"

"Ian and his crew worked diligently to install a new retaining wall and walkway for my front yard. They worked through the torrential downpouring and cold weather to get it all completed before I got back from a business trip (I knew it was raining due to my view from my ring doorbell). Needless to say, everything turned out better than I could have asked for. I definitely would use The Difference Landscapes again, and I Strongly recommend them to anyone who needs some hardscaping done."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Regular inspection for issues like cracks or leaning and ensuring drainage stays clear.
