I so enjoyed working with the crew that on three days I bought coffee and bread for them in the early mornings. The entire job took about six days (there were some rain delays). My row house in upper NW DC is 87 years old, and now it is easily the most attractive home from the curb on my block. They did an excellent job scraping, priming and then repainting the front Tudor wood beams (a dark chocolate brown), repairing and repainting the stucco (white), caulking windows, and repainting iron handrails. The chocolate brown wood now pops on the newly painted white stucco. Anthony Barrera was always desiring to make me satisfied. Proof of this is that Anthony has offered to do one more small indoor painting job for FREE, just to makeup for one occasion when he wasn't able to meet an agreed to appointment. Solid, unpainted stucco shouldn’t suffer damage from dots of glue used for this task. If the stucco is dirty, you may notice slight marks when you heat and peel the glue away, but these aren’t permanent.
However, not all stucco walls are solid stucco. Some are “faux” stucco with a foam backing. This kind of stucco veneer is more susceptible to damage, including damage from hot glue. We don’t suggest attaching anything to these kinds of stucco walls, so make sure you check the stucco type before starting this project.
Stucco will dry in two to three days, but you should wait one to two months to allow it to cure fully before you paint it. The curing process is slow, but leaving the material exposed to air and natural moisture will help it reach its maximum strength. If you live in a hot, arid climate, wait a month before painting. Wait two months before painting if you live in a more moderate or wet climate.
A standard drill will work just fine if you’re drilling small holes, and only a few of them. But anything with a diameter larger than 3/8 inch is best done with a hammer drill, since it is stronger, faster, and also makes your drill bits last longer. While you don’t absolutely need a hammer drill for stucco, it is a worthy investment if you think you might drill more holes down the road.
Choosing between traditional and synthetic stucco depends on your specific needs, budget, and climate. Both options are durable, but synthetic stucco includes an extra layer that makes it more resistant to cracking and a better choice for climates with extreme weather. In hot, dry climates with less rainfall, traditional stucco is a suitable and more affordable option that is less likely to trap moisture. Synthetic stucco also offers more color options and requires less maintenance.
