Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem, and it became clear that moving the damper from the bottom of the chimney to the top--usually not a problem, but in our house it was--was the cause. A new damper was ordered and installed, but did not fit quite correctly with our very old fireplace, so a second was ordered, installed, and works perfectly.
