"Eric and his company definitely earned this positive review and here is why. The first attempt at restoring my patio with replacing the polymeric sand in all the joints didn't go as planned, largely in part of the rainy weather and perhaps some areas where the crew, in my opinion, could have done a better job. The job was paid it full but 2-3 days later, it was quite apparent that the entire job would need to be repeated from scratch. Whereas most other companies, particularly those were already paid in full, would have considered the job "done" and not listened to their client's concerns, Eric and his company DID listen and very promptly returned to the site to determine how to repeat the work with an outcome that was clean, great, and has already received compliments from neighbors and friends. Sometimes the measure of satisfaction is how well you liked the job, but a true measure of satisfaction is how well a company will address and completely resolve all your concerns when mother nature has interfered, etc."

"Roofing Company removed slate roof and installed asphalt. House has a steep angled roof. I liked the actual work. Safety harness on men and fast service. What I didn't like was unprofessional attitude of company. Expensive plants and fine landscaping surrounds house much of which was crushed from falling debris. Plastic sheeting had been laid directly on delicate landscaping. When later researching this issue most companies lean long posts against the house. Then plastic sheeting is laid over and tacked to the posts. This lifts the sheet off of landscaping keeping plantings safe from falling debris. Article Title: If Your Roofer Ruins Your Bushes You Paid Too Much! I have children in my home so nail removal was important. The roofers did an adequate job. My Grandchildren collected 38 nails subsequently (for .25 cents each). The driver (who brought the roll-off) drove over my lawn causing deep grooves to grass and cracked the sidewalk. After 6 weeks the subcontracted trucking company agreed to pay for damage. I personally arranged cement and lawn repair company to fix the damage. I mention this as a negative against the roofer as I felt they should have assumed the responsibility of the repair and not myself. We paid the roofer $5500. They were almost lowest bid. We held $500 back until damage sidewalk was done. Roofer refused to pay anything towards the extensive damage to the landscaping. Manager pointed out that the contract read that foliage would be protected by being covered by sheeting. The contract also mentioned chance of some damage to property. What I take issue with was the disregard to the property. Heavy rope was left on the sheeting, the weight of that rope was crushing a bush. Piles of slate left on sheeting crushing plants. It wasn't until the men moved the plastic that I was aware of the damage this was causing and insisted the workers throw the slate away from the house! The men were agreeable and polite when I spoke to them. But where was the manager who promised he would be on site?? I called him, " I can't be at every job." But he was at my house the following day. He stayed the entire second day and the crew made effort to throw the slate into the garbage bin. The finished roof looks very good. The manager's final word was all companies do cover landscaping the way he does without posts. Make your own choice."

Dock Building and Repair questions, answered by experts

The most significant factor in knowing whether to repair or replace your dock is the extent of the damage and its age. If you have minor cracks on a few boards and the dock is less than 15 years old, it'll likely be worth repairing the damaged part. However, it's time to replace this essential water feature if you have significant damage, such as rotting wood in multiple areas, warps or cracks in the dock supports, or a damaged foundation.

When deciding how big of a dock you can build, you should check with your city and state for any restrictions. Some cities won’t allow docks larger than one-fourth of the width of a body of water, while others have no restrictions at all. Gather this information when you apply for your permits so you can plan the build accordingly.

It is possible to build your own dock, especially for simpler projects like a small floating dock, provided you are an experienced DIYer. However, dock building is a complicated process, and hiring a professional is recommended for larger, more complex projects that involve installing pilings or engineering a suspension structure.

A professional dock builder will have the necessary tools and skills to set post foundations, ensure proper anchoring, and build a safe, durable structure that can withstand marine conditions for decades. They are also knowledgeable about local regulations and permitting requirements. In some areas, it is illegal for anyone without a marine construction license to build a dock. Hiring a professional helps avoid these potential legal headaches and ensures the project is completed safely and correctly.

Most dock builds take 1-4 weeks, depending on design, permitting, and weather conditions.

Here are a few other considerations before you build, even if you're convinced you're in compliance with the law:

  • Are you damaging the environment? Bodies of water are often delicate ecosystems, and building a dock can be destructive and disruptive to the wildlife.

  • Are you blocking access? Lots of people like to use a lake, so you need to make sure your dock doesn't block public access to the water.

  • Can you enclose the dock? Just because you can build a dock doesn't mean you can build any dock you want. Some areas don't allow enclosed docks, for example.

  • Do you need to follow any specific rules or guidelines? Check with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management for any guidelines you’ll need to follow, including size and type restrictions.
