"Through Angi, I requested a quote to change the carpets on my 3rd level to hardwood floors. Kelvin responded quickly and gave me an estimate to change all of the hardwood from carpet and added some work to the kitchen floor. The day of the project he said I would need to pay more money to change all the floors to hardwood on the 3rd level and charged me $500 for the work even though it was already included in the work scope. He left the floors behind the stove and refrigerator in the kitchen a complete mess and didn’t inform me that holes were left in the floor. The floor looked ten times before the work that was done leaving me wondering about the qualifications of his staff because what professional would do that and purposely hid bad work behind the appliances."

You can lay carpet by yourself, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. DIY carpet installation can save you on labor costs, but you’ll have to pay more to get the right tools and equipment first. Carpet installation typically starts with removing the old flooring, preparing the subfloor, laying underpadding for cushioning, and securing the new carpet with tack strips, making precise cuts to fit room dimensions.

Because carpet tiles are designed to adhere to the subfloor directly, it’s usually not a good idea to install padding under them. Some carpet tiles come with padding attached to the tile if you prefer a cushier walking experience. In some cases, you can use a compact underlayment beneath your tiles, but you would likely need help from a pro to accomplish this type of installation.

Carpets should always be replaced after smoke damage. Particulates and chemicals can penetrate the carpet into the carpet padding, and it can be difficult to fully remove all traces of smoke or fire damage. If water is used to put out the fire, it can soak through the carpet, leading to mold growth and other issues. It’s best to be safe and replace your carpets after a fire.

It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.
