"We are very pleased with the solar panels, battery and energy system installed by Lumina Solar. Their sales pitch was informative, more than pressure sales. We discussed options available for solar and we selected Lumina Solar after considering two other companies. All of their team members were professional and thorough. We even experienced a small problem with our installation and their CEO stepped in to make things right, without hesitation. We highly recommend Lumina Solar to anyone who is actively looking to install solar panels for their home."

"I needed to replace a damaged section of roof that had 13 solar panels on it. I tried every installer in CT to get the panels removed and even tried the parent company, Omnidian. They all wanted to install new panels for me, but no one wanted to remove and reinstall existing solar panels. NYSM was willing to do the job even though I was outside their normal service area. They took all the panels off and stored them at the house and then reinstalled them after the roof work was complete. My wife remarked several times how nice, polite and hard working the crew was, especially Tito! He worked by himself on a Saturday to get everything installed and working before a snowstorm hit. I can't say enough good things about this company. Excellent in every aspect! 10 stars!!!"

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

Yes, solar panel installation will require permits. The required permits will depend on where you live, as some states and cities have solar-specific permits, while others only require electrical permits to connect to the grid. In either case, it’s best to hire a reputable solar installer in your area, as a representative should handle all of the necessary permitting for you and will include the cost of the permits in your initial solar estimate.

The best way to save money on solar panels is to take advantage of federal and state solar incentives. For example, the solar investment tax credit (ITC) offered by the federal government can save 30% of your total—if you can take the entire credit, which is based on income taxes owed—or an average of around $9,000. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) for state and local incentives that could save you even more.

You shouldn’t hook up a solar panel directly to a battery. That can damage the solar battery and your appliances over time. Instead, install a charge controller between your solar panel and solar battery. Charge controllers regulate voltage, prevent overcharging, and minimize the amount of electrical current to protect your battery from voltage spikes.

For most U.S. homeowners, switching to solar energy is an excellent investment. A properly sized solar array can significantly reduce your electric bill, saving money on utilities every month. Most homeowners enjoy savings that cover the cost of their solar systems within 12 years and then turn a profit. Additionally, federal and state tax incentives are available that help make solar an even better and more profitable investment.

No, you cannot turn on a new solar system before inspection. The inspector checks that the system is correctly connected to the grid and that safety components and features are in place. This process prevents problems on the electrical grid and offers protection against fire in your home.

Your local utility company may also require inspection documentation before you can connect to the grid. An inspection can ensure solar power efficiency and determine how you might increase it.
