Small jobs welcome

"I hired Paul to guide me through the ridiculously complicated permitting process in DC for repairing an existing exterior stairway in a historic district. Before engaging with Paul, the city was telling me I needed to demolish the stairs and rebuild them to code. I worked with an architect and it became clear that it was impossible to bring them up to code. Still, the city refused to back down and said the stairs couldn't be repaired. I then hired Paul, who recommended a number of improvements that would make the stairs safer without demolishing them, created a report, and then convinced the city with all of the relevant code citations. It became clear that Paul was far more knowledgeable than the city officials of their own regulations. While the process was still a labyrinth to navigate, Paul helped me overcome every hurdle that the city placed in front of me. I highly recommend Paul. I wouldn't have been able to get this work done without his expertise and his advocacy for me."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Consulting the architect of your house is not the best way to determine when it was built. Many homes are built by developers or builders, so there may not be a specific architect to track down—especially if you have a very old house. Instead, it’s best to rely on local government records.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

Federal and Colonial architecture are similar in that they both appear mostly utilitarian and symmetrical, but Federal architecture is a bit more ornate. Federal design often includes decorative palladium windows, window lintels, and, sometimes, columns surrounding a more decorative portico. Inside, Federal architecture is set apart by its centrally-located oval room. Additionally, Federal homes tend to have brick facades, whereas Colonial homes more often have wood siding.

Mediterranean architecture comes from traditional building styles of countries on the Mediterranean Sea mixed with French, Greek, and Moroccan influences. There are three main types of Mediterranean architecture: Italian Renaissance, Spanish Revival, and modern.

Some signature components of Mediterranean architecture include red terra cotta roofs, archways, stucco siding, and metal detailing on windows. These homes often have balconies and outdoor living areas.

Blueprints are generally available for houses built after the early 1900s. Before then, detailed building schematics like blueprints were rarely used and even more rarely saved. If you have an older house and need blueprints, you can have a new set drawn up by an architect or draftsperson.
