"I wanted to move my piano into climate-controlled storage while I was having new flooring installed in my home, so I found Johnson’s Piano Moving based on their excellent online reviews. Ted from Johnson’s worked with me to have my piano moved into their climate-controlled storage for a week during the installation. My house has a side entrance which made the move pretty challenging, but the excellent crews who moved the piano out and back in were very creative in accommodating the challenge with the front door and they took great care not to damage my railings on the stoop. I highly recommend Johnson’s Piano Moving!"

"We hired Potomac Moving Co for our local move. We downsized from a 3 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom apartment. Luis, David & Daniel were amazing! They were so professional & efficient. I would happily recommend them."

"Utilizing All Service Moving for the move was a very positive experience. They had good communication, answering several questions prior to the move and did a final confirmation just prior to the move date. As for the physical move itself, Jose, Abraham, and Alberto were polite, diligent, and careful moving the many items, and managed to complete the move more quickly than anticipated."

"Movers were extremely professional and made the move a breeze. They handled my items with great care and ensured that things were put in places I wanted. Great value and well worth not having to go through a stressful move myself. Would highly recommend Nation Capital Moving!"

"Our move on Labor Day was successful. I feel these movers were consistent, polite and worked around my crazy schedule. This move was an out of state move, but they were ery helpful in getting things out of our home in the short window we had. I feel the move turned out great, I would hire them again and recommend them to family and friends."

"I recently had the pleasure of using 495 Movers for a local move. They were the most professional, most responsive, and most expeditious moving company with whom I have workedâ and I have moved several times in the last 20 years. We did a FaceTime call to go over the particulars of the move, which was very safe and efficient given the spike in Covid. We received a bid very comparable to other movers, however the 495 Movers bid included tape, paper, moving boxes, and other necessities. The day of the move, Santos called a half hour before the teamâ s arrival. His team worked diligently and efficiently, showing the utmost care for all our valuables. The team of workers was very pleasant and professional. They packed and boxed a large townhouse within minutes of Santosâ s initial estimate. When they arrived at the new location, the team worked very quickly to move all our furniture into placeâ without a scratch to anything. They were very patient with us when we wanted a piece of furniture moved or changed. They completed the job in far less time than anticipated. I would highly recommend 495 Movers. Their professionalism, integrity, and efficiency are unparalleled. Thanks again for making (what we were imagining would be) a stressful experience and transition so smooth."

Moving questions, answered by experts

Before hiring a moving company to help you with your move, there are a few things you will want to ask, including:

  • Is there anything your company won’t move?

  • Does workers’ compensation cover the crew?

  • Will you disassemble and reassemble the furniture?

  • Are there packing restrictions?

  • Can you guarantee my delivery date?

  • Can you provide references?

  • What do you charge extra for?

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Deciding whether it's worth it to hire movers depends on your budget, patience, and physical capabilities. It's difficult to gauge the amount of work that moving calls for, and it's easy to be off by about tenfold.

If you're able to call in some favors and round up friends to help, you might get through it just fine, but if you only have a few hands helping, things can quickly get overwhelming. Either way, bringing in the pros will save considerable time and stress, so if it's within your budget, it's a great investment.

In most cases, you should get a full month’s notice for a move date. If you’re renting, your landlord or property management company is required to give the same amount of notice as your pay period length. So, if you pay rent each month, they will need to give you a month’s notice unless your leasing agreement says otherwise.

The amount you need to save depends on the cost of living in your new home country, your visa requirements, and the cost of health care and insurance.

To prepare for moving a piano, start by documenting its current condition with photos in case of any damage during the move. Secure the piano's lid and wrap the instrument, including its keys and pedals, with bubble wrap and moving blankets for protection. Note that if you have hired professional piano movers, they may handle this step for you.

Next, prepare the space. Measure any tight spaces or doorways to ensure the piano will fit through. Clear a wide path from the piano's location to the exterior door, removing any furniture or obstacles. It is also helpful to prop open doors to make the exit easier.

On moving day, ensure the moving truck can park as close to the exit as possible. For safety, keep children and pets away from the moving area to prevent accidents or distractions.
