"Clinton Electric is a very professional organization: responsive, efficient, quality materials, excellent workmanship and a reasonable price. Jordan Mayer, the electrician, who performed the installation was outstanding. I highly recommend this company."

Small jobs welcome

"Things went well. Russ Piper came out and met with me - to see what the project entailed. Meeting went well, I fully understood what they were going to do. I got a quote back quickly and moved forward with it.   When the plumber (Plumb Crazy)came out to see what needed to be done, I had some options .  I decided to have a higher service line brought into the home - now BGE is involved.   Without further stories - it took many weeks to get BGE to install the higher service, Throughout, this process, Benfield and the plumber where checking in with me for progress.  And when the inspections where all complete - they came right out and finished the installation."

"They checked my generator and said nothing was wrong, that the problem was probably with the electric companies transformer. My problem still exist. The electric company sent people out to check the current coming to my house and said everything is okay. They are going to install a monitor to check what is going on when there is an outage. So as of now my generator does not come on."

Customers say: Quick response

"Anthony and his team do expert electrical work of all kinds. We are a 145 year old non-profit organization with buildings and grounds, and have contracted with Technician Engineers Group (TEG) on two large projects (and several small ones) over the last 15 years. One project rewired a large 125 year old building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and one installed an extensive outdoor lighting system. In these two unusual situations TEG worked closely with us to find innovative solutions to our unique needs. We are very pleased with the results, enjoyed their can-do approach, and highly recommend this company for any electrical challenge. We found TEG reliable, honest, on time, and all the work was completed ahead of schedule."

"Callahan Electric has been our choice for 6 years! Last week Cody replaced a ceiling mounting box, installed a new ceiling fan and replaced a wall switch. He was not happy with the quality of the provided plastic switch cover, so he installed an upgrade that matched the others in our home! Given the current situation, we were a bit apprehensive about having a contractor in our home. Our fears were put rest when Cody arrived in a mask (early, no less!) and explained Callahan's commitment to continued meticulous adherence to science-based guidelines during these challenging times. Callahan has provided stellar electrical expertise for projects ranging from a major "from the studs out" renovation of our home to installing a new ground fault receptacle at our pond and everything in between. They are, and will continue to be, our electrical contractor of choice."

"I ended up getting a refund on the deal. They came out for the inspection and told me they would be able to install the electrical box, but it would be much more costly than the deal price. The technicians were professional and up front about the fact they could not do the work for the deal price. I appreciated their honesty and their effort to get back with me for an estimate on the electrical box installation. Scheduling was not an issue and they were able to come out within a week."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

While natural gas generators are costly, they’re a great option for standby power due to the reliability of natural gas as a fuel source. Unlike other fuels, natural gas is delivered through underground pipes, making outages extremely rare and less likely to be affected by the elements. As long as the area isn’t prone to earthquakes, they offer an unlimited supply of natural gas that doesn’t degrade over time or require storage in tanks.

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

You can expect a diesel generator to last for up to 30,000 hours of use, which works out to 20 to 25 years with the proper maintenance, of course. That depends on how much you use it, so a diesel generator used for emergencies a couple of times a year will last a lot longer than a generator that takes over for a faulty electrical grid every month for a day or two.
