"My pump switch at the tank in my basement was cycling on and off every 40 seconds. The noise of the cycling switch was bothering me at bedtime and something to worry about. First called Tom on the phone and was impressed by his knowledge and experience in the well industry The 2 other companIes I also contacted did not seem to be as experienced and gave me quotes without knowing the problem with my system. I chose Able Well and Pump Service after some research and investigating the area near the well where I found wet soil and runoff below the well head. Able Well and Pump was there in a couple of days. They arrived with a back hoe and quality parts to complete the well repair which turned out to be a corroded galvanized fitting connecting the well casing to the PVC pipe that goes into the house. A stainless steel fitting and a lot of digging solved my problem. Thanks to Tom and Mike for being patient with all my questions and getting the job done. The men also adjusted the pressure in the tank and cleaned the switch contacts. Cost was reasonable for the job. I would call Able Well and Pump again without hesitation. Thanks, Tom and Mike and Angi for the listings of professionals."

"My well pump pressure tank needed service and I called Friday and Barbara was very professional and eager to help. She took the time to understand the issue and even reviewed the pictures. Barbara is very passionate about her job. She was able to schedule for Saturday. Dave came out. He called to let me know that he was on his way and let me know when he will arrive. He was very punctual, professional, friendly, and down to business. Totally impressed with the way he solved the problem and made sure that answered all of my questions. This company is very ethical and I would recommend them to anyone."

"Roy was responsive, making a visit the day we called about the drained pipes. He called in advance of arriving, and was careful with his tools to avoid any unnecessary mess. He also wore booties to protect the floor. Best of all, he was careful about testing the lowest-cost solution before bringing in larger tools and incurring more charges. Within a half hour he'd addressed all the leaks and was on his way.

The team arrived on time as anticipated and were very friendly. They quickly diagnosed my problem and answered all of my questions. "Our service technician was David. He arrived earlier than expected and went straight to work. Our new pump was installed in less than one hour. We were pleased with the work. He came after hours 6:30pm and did not charge an exorbitant fee. He was pleasant and very informative when asked questions. If there was a topic he was not familiar with he answer "I'm not sure". I like reliable companies with professional employees. We had another plumber come earlier and wanted to charge us $452 dollars for a 1/2 HP pump that cost on average $242, $200 for accessories for installation (I paid $276 taxes included for pump and accessories), labor charge to go and pick up the pump and to install the pump. His price $1252. I was told that it was considered an emergency so that is why the price was so high. This was the morning two days after the flood. After we got the pump we called several times and no response as of yet, He's off my list completely. I share this illustration so that buyers can make educated decisions about how best to spend their money. I don't assume that the plumber whose charges were 50% higher than anyone else I called on Angies List. I simply say do your homework and know what is considered a fair price. Thank you Jerry's Heating and Plumbing. You do excellent work in a timely fashion!"

Wells and Pumps questions, answered by experts

No. Well pump replacement is not recommended as a DIY project, particularly if you have a deep well and a submersible pump. Plumbing and electricity are best left to the pros, especially when something like your well pump includes both. Even when troubleshooting your pump, it pays to have a partner standing by for your assistance and safety.

Ideally, you should conduct a mechanical inspection and a bacterial or well water inspection yearly. While you might be able to push it off to every other year, it’s best to have peace of mind, especially when it comes to something that you use so frequently.

If you experience repeated gastrointestinal illness in the household, it's important to test the well water more regularly for quality and cleanliness to check for bacteria.

Wells typically replenish at a rate of about five gallons per minute, but several variables can influence how quickly they refill. A deep well will take more time to replenish than a shallow one. The replenishment rate can be slowed by issues such as leaks, damage, a faulty well pump, or a clogged well screen. Other factors, such as the surrounding geology, regular precipitation, and proper maintenance, also affect the recovery rate.

Some states and municipalities restrict well pump repair and replacement to licensed plumbers and technicians, while others don’t have requirements. However, it’s always a good idea to hire a certified plumber to repair or replace well pumps and water pumps. Certified professionals are far more likely to get the job done correctly and prevent future issues, which is especially important for ensuring access to clean water for your home.

A leaking well pipe is quite different from if the well itself is leaking. To seal a leaking well, pour a cement mixture or bentonite into the space between the well casing and the borehole wall. The heavier cement collects at the bottom to form a solid seal, pushing lighter materials like mud and fluids up toward the surface. Professional well installation companies have the equipment to do this properly.
