Small jobs welcome

"I hired Kenâ s Home Improvement to do a drywall repair after my son accidentally put a hole in the wall with his foot. When I talk to Ken on the phone, was very professional. He had me explained exactly what happened, I sent him a text with the picture of the hole and he was able to quote me a price right over the phone. Ken was prompt, polite, and neat and performed the work in a timely and professional manner. I highly recommend Kenâ s Home Improvement and plan on hiring Ken again for additional work that I need to have completed"

"Our house had a partially missing footer because the company who installed our deck removed the footer to install a footer for the deck but failed to repair the footer for the house. There was a crack in the foundation wall as well. The repair included repairing the footer and placing piers to support the footer. And jacking the wall in order to close the crack. Santos Cruz and Anthony Frock did an excellent job explaining the process and executing the repair. Both were professional and courteous."

"The painter arrived on time. I provided the paint; he provided the brush and covering for the front sidewalk and back cement area next to the door. There is cement between the porch floor and the brick wall. He painted the cement but we had a disagreement about whether he left paint on the brick ; he said no and I said yes. There was an area of white paint on the brick; when I touched it with my finger there was paint on my finger. The area below the cement was not covered up during the painting process and now shows paint. The back door had not been painted in many years and had cracked paint. The painter scraped off the old paint on the door and around the door frame. The company provided a discount for being an Angie's List member. This company office was difficult to reach prior to coming for the paint job. I called the office but calls were not quickly returned. I was advised to buy a specific brand of paint but when I had additional questions no one from the office contacted me."

"Working with Arthur and the Ballard Enterprises team was a great experience. They did an amazing job with the landscaping, cleanup, and retaining wall. I nearly cried because I haven't seen the outside of my home look decent in so long. :-) The brick for the retaining wall is beautiful and it seems to "brighten" the home. Ballard also did cleanup in my back area and WOW! It looks great and no more walking through tall weeds and mint to get to my deck. I appreciate Arthur teaching me about hostas. I'm not a gardener and know very little about plants and had no idea that was in my yard. And I thought this would take a couple of days but they completed everything in one day. Also I appreciated the quick scheduling of the project and I'm sure my neighbors appreciated it too. :-) Would highly recommend Ballard and have already received many compliments about the work done. I've let them know who performed the work. And I would work with them again."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

With foundation walls, the slab on grade and force at the top of the wall is resisted by flooring. With retaining walls, the force at the top of the wall is not resisted.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Through proper drainage solutions and compacting the foundation soil.

Even if you think you know how to build a retaining wall theoretically, doing the actual work is a completely different story. There are lots of nuances in building retaining walls, and the slightest oversight can compromise their integrity. Therefore, we recommend you hire a pro to build, repair, or replace retaining walls.
