"I recently had the pleasure of working with Erik from First State Ponds, and I can't recommend him enough. Erik traveled all the way from Delaware to Maryland to service my pond, which was having persistent issues with murky water. Before connecting with Erik, I had already been advised by another company to purchase a specific filter and pump. Thankfully, I found First State Ponds just in time. Over time, your septic tank can accumulate a buildup of sludge at the bottom of the tank. If you’re using it as a preventative measure, say in the event that you frequently experience clogs, once every one or two years or so is a good time frame. The number of times will depend, though, on how old your plumbing is and how prone it is to clogging.

The septic tank needs to be pumped at least every three to five years. If the septic tank is too small for the property, you might find it needs to be pumped more frequently, and during an inspection, a septic company may recommend updating your system to a larger septic tank. While 750-gallon tanks used to be standard, septic tanks with a 1,250-gallon capacity are now more common.

If you’re maintaining your septic system, your drain field should last around 20 years. However, it’s important to get it inspected every two to five years to help your system last as long as possible and make sure it’s in safe, working order.
