"Very professional and organized. They took out a large Norway Spruce in my yard and trimmed 5-6 others that were overgrown. Also trimmed a maple in front that was coming close to power lines. Big job. Did an excellent job and thoroughly cleaned up after they were done. Lived in my house 27 years and had a number of tree people here. They were by far the best ones. Give them a six out of five if I could."

Small jobs welcome

"I've had several projects completed in the last 6 months and every time the work was outstanding. Started out as regular grass cut and trim but morphed into major cleanup of overgrown shrubs interlaced with ivy. All cleaned up and ivy removed. Just today our non-maintained magnolia trees were cleaned up and things growing underneath completely cleaned out. Been here 40 years and it's never looked this good."

"Wonderfully. Mr. Harmon's estimate was lower than any others, including one offered by a neighbor whose friend had a cherry picker truck and from whom we have been buying firewood for decades! The Tri State crew made us a priority and came within days of the initial estimate. (Only storms and rain kept them from doing it immediately.) The crew was thorough, quick, and not only cut branches up into sizes for burning, but stacked them in our wood pile! They had top notch equipment, were extremely courteous, efficient, and impeccable with their clean up. Once the tree was down, we realized that the hornet's damage had eaten away more than half of the tree's diameter at its base! We were truly in danger with this damaged tree. It was within 8 feet of our house and the branches extended over half of our roof, right over our bedroom! We live on a wooded lot and from now on, Tri State Tree Service will be our only go to for trimmed branches and tree removal. I cannot recommend them any more highly. Thank you, Mr. Harmon. Your kindness, expert advice and quick action probably saved our lives."

"They were responsive and adjusted to my availability. They got & posted permitted no-parking signs. They arrived right on time, reviewed the work plan with me, conducted & completed the work, cleaned everything up to include blowing my patio clear, and checked back in for my opinion of the work before leaving. They were professional and provided an excellent service. I will hire them back in three to four years when the tree will need to be retrimmed."

"Highly recommend Tri-County Tree Service. Quick to respond to request for free estimate. Work was performed when scheduled. All team members were courteous, professional and respectful of the property. They cleared the area of all tree debris. It was interesting to watch how the team carefully brought down this diseased mighty Oak. It is a relief to know that the danger of it falling is no longer a concern. Will definitely use again for all my tree removal needs."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

For small trees, tree removal should take just a couple of hours to complete. Assume that a mid-sized tree will take between four and eight hours, depending on the extent of the equipment required and the health of the tree. Remember to add up to two hours for stump removal. Larger trees could take as long as one or two working days, about eight hours each.

Any cutting of tree roots can hurt or kill a tree, which is why it's recommended you don’t do it unless the roots are damaging or invasive on a nearby structure like your home. You should never cut more than 15 percent of above-ground tree roots at one time. If you have any questions about cutting tree roots, contact your local arborist.

The costs vary from $250 to $5,000 per tree, depending on the size, complexity of the trimming, and labor.

Ideally, you’ll have a good enough relationship with your neighbors that you can kindly mention this task in regular conversation. However, every neighbor (and neighborhood) is different. Your best bet will always be to ask directly and nicely, offering to contribute to the tree trimming efforts if you’d like. However, if you are bothered by the tree and your neighbor is unwilling to cut it, you can involve the help of the homeowners’ association or local authorities, if applicable.
