"My double hung Anderson windows came with the house and work perfectly, except the double pain glass is not treated UV or infrared. After considering window replacement I decided the best option was to professionally tent the windows for one tenth the price of new windows. I found Arctic Window Tinting in the Angie's magazine with a discount for members and them called for an estimate. I spoke with Bob who answered my questions and scheduled a home visit at my convenience. He measured the 24 windows and 2 skylights and discussed the options. He was very professional and I never felt pressured to up-sell or make a decision. After reviewing the options, I selected the Purlite 40 to give me almost 100% UV rejection and 80% heat rejection. The installer was very meticulous and careful to get every window perfect. The results look like factory tinting and the natural shade does not diminish the wonderful view I have of the backyard and forest. Even close up you cannot tell it was not part of the original window. The effect is just what I wanted. We no longer have to close the blinds on the southwest side of our house. Our house stays cooler and we are saving energy for only a small investment in tinting."

"Mr. Mackay came over very quickly after being contacted, and checked over our roof. He was very forthright and clear with his explanation of what we need to do. He told me that he was basically talking himself out of a job, but that we can do the work ourselves (sealing seams on the sunroom roof and caulking the skylights as needed). He said that it would be a lot cheaper for us to hire a MHIC licensed handyman to do the work, as they could certify the roof, as well. I appreciate Mr. Mackay's candor and professionalism, and will definitely contact them in future if needed."

"Our 22 year old house was in dire need of a new roof and I dreaded looking for a roofing contractor that provided excellent work at a fair price. After getting four disappointing estimates from roofing contractors in my area I joined Angie's List and got three more estimates. Exterior Solutions was the first contractor that I called from Angie's List and the owner John Abbott answered the phone and came out within two days to look at the job. John took the time to answered all my questions, described in detail what he proposed to do and had shingle samples for me to choose from. Upon leaving he said that he would email the estimate to me that night. True to his word the estimate arrived that night and it was much more reasonable then the others I had received. That said I called two more roofing contractors from Angie's List and made appointments with then to get estimates. Both roofers came out, walked the roof, gave me their sales pitch, and I received an estimate. One of the estimates was very close to Exterior Solutions but after discussing it with my wife we chose Exterior Solutions because we were very impressed with John Abbott. I called John to inform him that we wanted Exterior Solutions to replace our roof and the next evening he was at our house with the contract in hand to sign. During that meeting we discussed the day he was going to start and how long it was going to take. Sure to his word John and his crew were up on the roof Wednesday morning receiving a delivery of roofing material and starting the tear off. Unfortunately it started raining and eventually started to snow and the work had to be halted to the next day. Fast forward two days and the old shingles are off and the new ones on. They came back Saturday morning to flash the two chimney's and do a final clean up. I know John said that he would tarp all our shrubs and our deck but my wife and I didn't want to take any chances so we took it upon ourselves to cover our deck with a tarp and plywood since we just replaced it the previous summer. The clean up was  OUTSTANDING and the crew of Exterior Solutions even took it upon themselves to clear the deck of the plywood and tarp the we put down. When you tear off that much roof there is a fair amount of trash (shingles, paper, aluminum, roofing nails, etc.) and I can honestly say that after walking around the house I may have found just a handful of trash that was missed. In conclusion, based on my experience I would  HIGHLY  Recommend Exterior Solutions for roofing, they did a great job and were a pleasure to work with."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.
