"Steven and Anne of Ferris Blinds, Shades & Shutters were so professional, friendly, and competent and we enjoyed working with them to design and install our window coverings. They were quick to return our call and flexible to scheduling our appointment. They did a wonderful job listening to what we were looking for and then gave us a detailed explanation on the variety of options available. Steven arrived on time on installation day and carefully cleaned up afterward. We received phone and email confirmations for our appointments and were kept informed with details such as when he expected the blinds and shutters to come in. The entire process from start to finish could not have been smoother. We are very happy with their service and the the beautiful end result and highly recommend Ferris Blinds, Shades and Shutters."

Small jobs welcome

"I have been a night store mgr at a large home improvement chain and I notice that this company, fathet and sons put their customers needs and deliver exactly what I imagined the work to come out to in both quality and cost effectiveness. They also finish all of their work. This has been the third time that I have used this company, and they exceed what I have expected every time. Thank you Home Advisor!!!!!!"

"Made an appt. with Castle Rep, James, for 17 windows and vinyl siding. He spent 1 hour talking about how great his company and windows are before finally getting down to the issue. We were told that CASTLE makes and services their own window, with all the best technology and technicians available. The price per window for energy efficient came out to over $1,200 per double-hung window! And since they make their own products, we could not find a way to compare quality and price with other manufacturers. But his per-window price exceeds the average price of $500-700 by A LOT! When we balked, he made a call to his "manager" to see if we qualified for a "special promotional" discount. If we were to commit right there on the spot, we would get an additional 10% off! Still way to high. We said we would think about it (he got sad and snippy), and that we wanted to hear about the vinyl siding quote before we made any decisions. He told us he could not give us a siding quote until his company did an "eagle view" measurement, which would require another appointment! We had no intention of sitting through ANOTHER high-pressure appointment. High pressure, long-drawn out presentation and he would not leave us with anything in writing! No brochures, prices, nothing! He refused to put anything in writing and we could not have a break down of labor and costs. I even asked him if I could have a copyhh of the window warranty and he said "only if you purchase right now." And they did not come prepared with references or previous job locations! When we further researched the company, we found they did make very excellent products, but the #1 complaint was by far that they did not honor their lifetime warranty and that customer service was horrible. In the end, we chose not to do business.."

"This is pretty much as good as it gets without having the designer come to your house.  We received detailed recommendations for lighting, accessories, fabric types, window treatments, lots of good details in the recommendations.  The actual remodel changed the room, but most of the recommendations still apply.  I'm not sure about the prices of the items they recommend, but it does give you practical ideas for furniture you may already have or how to shop in a retail store, etc.

Window Treatments FAQs, answered by experts

Drafts, condensation between panes, difficulty operating, or visible frames or glass damage are signs of needed repairs.

Impact windows are a type of window made with impact-resistant glass, designed specifically for hurricanes. The glass, treated with ethylene-vinyl, can withstand winds up to 200 mph, as well as flying debris. Brands sometimes test their impact windows with large missile impact tests.

Impact windows may be required in some places. For instance, the Florida Building Code requires homes to have impact-resistant windows if they live within a mile of the coast where wind speeds can reach 110 mph or more.

Windows last between 15 and 30 years on average. The glass tends to last for around 20 years, while the frames last up to 50 years. This varies by the type of window frame material, glass quality, location, and level of maintenance. Wood frames have the shortest lifespan and require repainting or resealing every couple of years, while fiberglass has one of the longest lifespans.

There are many standard window sizes. The most common windows, single or double-hung models, typically range from 2-feet by 3-feet up to 4-feet by 6-feet. Of course, sliding windows will be wider than they are tall, though the standard sizing follows the same measurements.

Energy-efficient windows are judged on their performance according to a few different factors, including heat transfer, air leakage, light transference, and condensation resistance. If you're unsure whether a window is energy-efficient, look for an ENERGY STAR® label from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If various products, including windows, meet energy-efficiency standards set by the federal government, the EPA issues this label to help consumers identify energy-efficient products.
