"I have a 28 year old asphalt driveway that needed to be resurfaced. He was prompt providing a quote at a fair price compared to three others. His crew did one day of prep work consisting of digging out crumbled/cracked areas and edging the entire 300' driveway. Efflorescence can damage a concrete slab for two to three years. After that, it resolves on its own once the surrounding salts are gone.

If your concrete steps have crumbled or chipped, you can fix them by removing any chips or flakes, cleaning and wetting the affected area, applying a concrete bonding agent, and finally applying new concrete, usually in the form of Portland cement. For widespread damage, you can consider concrete resurfacing instead. For fixing concrete spalling that has led to deep damage, you might need to remove damaged material, add structural supports, and pour new concrete into a mold.

The typical cost to resurface a patio is around $4 per square foot, or about $400 for a 100-square-foot patio.

Pervious concrete should be between 4 and 8 inches thick to drain water properly. Surfaces like parking lots and driveways should be at least 6 inches thick to accommodate the weight of vehicles, while patios and walkways may be poured between 4 and 6 inches thick. There’s no standard for pervious concrete thickness, but in most cases, the more weight the surface will need to hold, the thicker it should be.

To improve the appearance of concrete steps, you can repair any damage, refresh the surface, and add decorative elements. For crumbling, chipping, or broken sections, consider concrete resurfacing or light repair. If the surface is intact but discolored, applying a coat of paint, stain, or concrete sealer can refresh its look; reapplying a sealer every one to two years is recommended for maintenance. For a quick enhancement, you can also add decorative items like potted plants, garden statues, lanterns, or decorative railings to spruce up the area.
