"Fantastically well. Excellent advice on necessary materials and timeline for the work. Skilled, knowledgeable, and professional. Was able to adapt to unexpected situation when the floor needed to be bolstered unexpectedly without significantly adding to the project timeline. Made valuable suggestions addressing the cost of different options and the available budget, so the final product was within my cost range, but if higher quality than I thought we could afford. Would absolutely hire again."

"The job was a big one.  Our house is 100 years old this year, and we have committed to updating it, while trying to maintain the historical look.  David came through on the initial walkthrough, and spent almost two hours with me.  We discussed each and every room, and what we hoped to accomplish.  His quote was delivered promptly by email.  It was detailed, and broken down by individual tasks within each room.  This allowed us to pick and choose exactly what we wanted to do, in what order, and more importantly what we could afford.  It was very helpful!  We started with our master bedroom.  The walls were in need of treatments, and numerous layers of joint compound to make smooth and paint.. The job was clearly evolving into being bigger than was initially thought.  David and his guys were not derailed, even after first results were not successful.  They stuck too it, and the final result was great.  They stayed late when needed, and cleaned up thoroughly each day.  They came and worked during the recent snow storms, not letting the weather act as a barrier to progress.  The resulting paint job is one we are thrilled with.  We have already recommended David and his guys to friends, and they too were VERY HAPPY with their work as well.  If you are looking for a contractor, David Harris and his crew are for you!

"Demyan and his crew did a great job on all aspects of the job. We've received multiple compliments on our house. It was a beautiful siding job and they were a pleasure to deal with start to finish. New gutter installation and doors came out fine. Great job."

"It all started with a sagging beam in the dining room of our almost 300 year old house. We knew that it would require special skills  to figure out what the problem(s) were and what would be needed to fix things.
Colonial Restorations was the answer!  I found their ad in Angie's List Boston and North edition and went to their website where we found pictures of old houses, barns and mills all requiring the sort of work we knew we were going to need.
Tom Greene and his son Brad came to look at the project, talked in depth with us about what might be needed, and worked up a plan and estimate for us.  They were very honest and straight forward about the problems facing us and the fact that as they started the job they might find more problems than we were expecting. (They were right!)
My husband, a mechanical engineer , had done a lot of restoration work on other parts of the house many years ago and was impressed with the knowledge and understanding that Tom and Brad about handling this particular job.  They communicated well with us and answered many questions (from me) about what was being done.  The work progressed, between rainstorms in June and July, and when the job was finished,  the north side of our 18th century house was proudly sporting new sills, posts, plates, floor joists and a roof  extension.
We are preparing to hire them back again for another project on the front of our house.  We wouldn't have anyone else do this work.  Tom and Brad really know what they are doing!"

"Everything went great, there were a couple changes that had to be made as the job progressed, we found out the old toilet had been leaking pretty badly, and there was a bunch of rotting floor boards.  Other than that they completed the job within our time frame, cleaned the house up at the end of each day very well, and really treated our home like it was theirs.  Everything was sealed up with plastic barriers so we wouldn't get dust throughout the house, I was very pleased about that.  We plan to have them back in the next year or two for the kitchen.

Greenhouses and Nurseries questions, answered by experts

The quickest way you can protect plants and trees from frost is to cover them with garden blankets or frost cloths. Also, bringing potted plants or trees indoors is much simpler than trying to cover and protect them outdoors. Remember to anchor blankets with something such as sandbags, fabric pins, or rocks if the forecast calls for strong winds to keep them from blowing away and exposing your trees and plants.

In most cases, wait three to five days to repot or relocate a plant from a greenhouse or nursery. That way, your plant has time to recover from any shock during the move and adapt to the conditions in and around your home. Some hearty plants may not need as long, and delicate plants might need several weeks. You should ask the professional at your nursery for a recommended timeline. Consider asking about an initial watering schedule to help stimulate root growth and promote a healthy plant.

Minor fixes like patching leaks or repainting are DIY-friendly, but structural repairs require professional expertise.

Adding burnt charcoal to your garden beds and plant pots can yield several benefits, but there are risks involved, too. Charcoal, particularly biochar, can enhance soil structure, improve water drainage, and increase nutrient retention. When activated, charcoal provides key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, burnt charcoal, especially from briquettes, can inadvertently alter soil's pH levels and become hazardous to plants. Overall, there are better and less risky soil amendments available, such as vermiculite, perlite, or wood chips.

Eco-friendly materials include sustainably-sourced woods, recycled metals, low-VOC paints, and non-toxic sealants, which reduce environmental impact. Using these in repairs promotes sustainability and can improve indoor air quality and overall building health.
