"I needed a professional opinion from a plasterer to evaluate a poor plastering job done in my home. Colin was professional, responsive and prompt with his assistance. Colin is a man of his word who follows thru with his promises. I will be hiring Colin to finish plastering work that was not part of the initial work done in my home."

"Ferraz Plastering did a very professional job repairing a ceiling that was broken in a bedroom. They re plastered the entire ceiling, matching the pattern that was in the rest of the house. They are professional, knowledgeable and personable. They gave us options and explained the process. Also they arrived on time, performed the job efficiently and on time and cleaned very well once they were done. We highly recommend their services."

"I needed a repair on my ceiling with a scroll pattern. I had quotes from several companies. MJM Plastring was the only one that indicated that I had a "sand finish scroll pattern" on my ceiling and replied that he had done repairs on these patterns before. He even sent a picture of a recent repair , not of a sand finish scroll, but of another pattern. I hired MJM for the job. Mike came and was the owner, indicate that the rest of his crew was at another job. Mike was professional in every respect. Put down plastic and cleaned up afterwords. I was very impressed with therepair. I cant even tell it was a repair as it blended in perfectly. I am very happy and would highly recommend MJM Plastering without hesitation."

"Derek and his team were excellent. We were in a pinch and on an unrealistic timeline and needed a lot of plastering a couple days before we hosted Thanksgiving at our house. My wife reached out to him and he responded to her right away and was at our house the next day. He promised to us he could fit us in and get it done. He fulfilled his promise and the work was excellent. I would highly recommend DM Plastering to anyone. Very professional, helpful, and excellent work."

"Excellent work, excellent price, done in a timely manner. Alesandro and his crew did an outstanding plastering job on replacing very damaged ceilings in multiple rooms of my home. They worked with good attitudes and left my house very neat. I would definitely recommend them and hire them again!"

Plaster Repair FAQs, answered by experts

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

To maintain plaster walls, inspect them regularly for cracks and seal them early. Clean the walls by dusting regularly or using a gentle, damp cloth. It's also important to avoid moisture exposure. Repainting as needed will help maintain the wall's appearance and longevity.

Applying plaster to a wall will usually cost between $2 and $10 per square foot for both the material and labor. The cost will vary based on the quality of the plaster you’re using and whether or not prep work is required before the work begins. Wall prep can add up to about 10% to your total costs. Plastering exterior walls can be more expensive in many cases because they are taller and require scaffolding and safety equipment.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.
