He came in well above all the others, but when we compared the estimates, his included all the work while others left out the pieces that were very important and we would have been charged for. They had availability and Jay stayed in regular communication about schedules as we hammered out the kinks with the insurance company and code officer. They were prompt to start work. As I said, it was the deepest, darkest heart of winter. They busted snow and ice to prepare the site for staging the first day. The next day when they came in to build it was twenty below zero. Farenheit. They worked in that cold all week and heated their makeshift tent around the clock. They were responsive to our fussing about the exhaust from the heater, as well as problem solving the cable line that got cut on day 1. These guys were super tight, timely, and tidy. They did some inside work as well to finish it up and that was very well done. All in all, they were done in under a week and we were back on wood heat. Our new chimney is to code. We had no idea how unsafe we were before. The stove burned better than ever and our perennial spring time carbon monoxide problems were no longer an issue. Did I mention they kept it all real clean? We had a bit of clean up this spring, but there was 4' of snow on the ground when they were working. I've recommended Jay Leland to friends and anyone who will listen. We were so incredibly lucky in persisting through multiple estimates till we landed here. While he was here working, my partner realized that she used to work with Jay's mother years ago, and then she remembered the photos of his stonework his mom used to bring to work to show off what her boy was up to. She was impressed back then. I think we were incredibly lucky the stars lined up right that we got these guys on our job. Arm replaced my brick facade chimney from the roofline up, good sized piece of masonry work, about 4x4x8 They had the best price by a substantial margin. Others gave us quotes of 5-7 days to do the job. Arm quoted 2-3 days. The job was largely done in 2 days and they returned on the 3rd morning to finish and break down/clean up their scaffolding, etc. I was a little nervous about the low price/quality since others had advised a lead pan be installed and Arm did not quote the lead pan. On the 2nd day, Gus recommended putting in the pan. It was not much more and even with the added cost the price continued to be well under the quotes of the others. He was helpful, gave advice, explained everything. Would hire them again and recommend them to others. He did just what we wanted with front door and back door stairs where, for now, we didn't want to spend big dollars. But we wanted first class on the chimney-- which he did. We have recommended him to my sister-in-law and will so for anyone else needing masonry work. Only draw-back is that Russell is getting old. He struggled to get the intitial layers of the scafolding up, but of course had two helpers when they went the rest of the way. We would say he will have to quit within the next five years. Maybe less. So hurry. You will certainly find him to be a nice guy to deal with-- a real yankee character. The project was 12mos late (on a 16w project) when I fired them.
We got roughly 4-5 man days a month and nothing but lip service to our concerns over quality and schedule. The remodel added a small 2-story bump out to the kitchen and expanded a bedroom above. This might seem a grand plan for a 'kitchen' company. But, we saw some other projects and they were on the same scale. From the get go we were second or third in line for attention. Groundbreaking slipped, foundations slipped further in the schedule. day after day of no-shows. We went round and round over the schedule and when, exactly, we were to take priority. It never happened. They got ahead of us in terms of $$ paid for what had been completed and I could never bring myself to walk away from the $$, choosing instead to forge ahead and let them make it right.
As each phase of the project was 'completed' the list of mistakes and punch items grew. Without fail, each sub, plumbing, framing, electrical, etc, had major follow up issues I could never get addressed. Ultimately, a contractor friend saw the building and called into question some of the framing versus the architectural plans. We brought in 2 structural engineers and documented the mistakes. MAJOR issues. Through poor workmanship and lack of an onsite project manager, each sub just cut the corners they could get away with and L&W simply chose to ignore our complaints. Now, we're into the 'remediation' almost as much as we paid for the entire project. They called for almost no inspections and we've had to pay the new guys to take responsibility for the work so we don't have issues.
Since they were fired, we've been contacted by several of the subcontractors who worked on our job looking for $$. Apparently, another great quality of Lewis & Weldon is that they slow pay their contractors or simply cut the $$ owed under bs claims. For example, a subcontractor quoted a price for the job based on a schedule and getting in and out by a certain date. Since L&W are so bad at project management, the dub had to come back numerous times to try and get things done around other work. When they asked for additional money for a bigger amount of work they were simply not paid. We had at least 2 framing companies, 2 electricians, 2 masonry companies, and 2 insulation companies. All had issues around being paid.
L&W is now counter suing for the remainder of the contract they were fired from! 12 mos late. breach of contract all over the place. I can't imagine how much longer they'll be in business under this name. Most of the subs on the cape are aware of their bs.
You've been warned. They come across like they're your best friend and looking out for you. You are nothing but a check for the next ski weekend."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/ma/hyannis/lewis-and-weldon-custom-kitchens-reviews-5662819.htm"},"position":9}]}

MVS Masonry did a great job on my garage floor. They showed up on time, very courteous, left my job site spotless. I will be hiring them again.
Porterhorn Masonry was contracted to replace the deteriorating front entryway steps in my home. A 2-step, all-brick assembly with blue stone on the horizontal surfaces was chosen as a replacement. The end result is STUNNING and is undoubtedly the finest entryway stairs in the entire Captain's...

This was one of those "good from disaster" stories. Our primary heat is wood. Our chimney was taken down at the roof line by about a ton and a half of snow and ice in mid-January. We had four other chimney folks out to look at this before the fourth declined the job but gave us Jay's...

"The system was installed so that the pipes were pitched away from the sump, the pipe from the sump outside leaked back into the basement, and the exterior drain wasnt dug to grade so water backed up towards the house. When contacted about the issue, dryzone sent out a tech who confirmed every issue. The company then refused to fix anything without a second opinion. A month after I filed a chargeback, the GM called to "apologize", and made it sound like he wouldnt contest the chargeback, but offered no remedy to the situation. He then contested the chargeback and lied on the chargeback rebuttal. Eventually they settled for a partial refund. Terrible company, dont recommend."

If you want to avoid damaging your home's brick, you should always use a stain specifically formulated for masonry projects. These stains are designed to penetrate the porous surface of the brick and bond with it, unlike paints, which sit on the surface and are prone to peeling and flaking. Look for stains labeled for use on brick or other masonry surfaces. Avoid using regular paint on brick, as it will not adhere well and will likely lead to future maintenance issues.
While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.
Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.
Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.
Yes, it’s usually possible to repair damaged brick mailboxes. If the masonry is damaged, the brick can be cut out and replaced, or the mortar joints can be cut out and retucked. However, the new mortar will likely be different in color from the original mortar joints. In most cases, if the mailbox itself is damaged, it’s possible to cut it out and replace it. Consult a masonry contractor to determine whether it’s worth repairing your brick mailbox based on its value and amount of damage.
Fireclay is a type of clay but it is a type of clay that, because of its chemical composition, can be fired at a much higher temperature than other clays. This results in a denser and more heat-resistant final material. Because of the high percentage of a mineral called kaolin, fireclay sinks are smoother and more durable than other clay types.
Minor hairline cracks in mortar are normal over time. This is a natural occurrence as bricks settle. You should worry about cracks in brick if you see vertical cracks that widen as they move up, stair-step cracks, L-shaped cracks, or deep horizontal cracks. These are all more serious signs of foundation damage.
