I paint cabinets; typically the cabinets that I am painting are wood or melamine, with a laquered surface. I take down the doors and drawer faces and bring them home to spray with shellac primer and Benjamin Moore Aura non-toxic paints. To evaluate whether you can paint the old wood stain and varnish, closely examine the entire surface to check for rot, mold, or moisture intrusion. Repair any damage with a good wood filler and scrape or sand any loose material until you have a uniform surface. 

If you don’t want to follow a two-step priming and painting process and instead would like to keep the varnished wood look but your old coating has failed, it’s possible to go back over the stained wood with a solid stain product, which is a blend of color pigments and varnish. 

Solid stain applies like paint, is typically oil-based, and will hide many imperfections, particularly with two coats. With colors ranging from deep purple, blues, red, and shades of tan and white, solid stain is one method to reduce the amount of work required to recover stained wood, but the look isn’t for everyone. Preparation steps are the same for solid stain applications as for paint products.

If you prefer not to sand your particle board cabinets prior to painting, you can use mineral spirits and a rough sponge to add some grit to your medium-density fiberboard cabinets so that the paint will still stick. Keep in mind that using 120-grit sandpaper is still the preferred method for preparing your particle board cabinets for a new coat of paint.

Many DIYers like to spray paint cabinets because it provides a more even-looking finish than painting with a brush. However, getting comfortable with a spray painter takes time and without practice, you may not spray the surfaces evenly. Take some time to practice painting with a HVLP sprayer on cardboard or scrap wood before diving into your project.

The cost to paint kitchen cabinets is $900 on average but can range anywhere from $175 to $3,000 for a large kitchen. You can expect to pay between $3 and $10 per square foot for this project. 

The type of paint can impact your total cost. Latex and acrylic paint typically range from $20 to $50 a gallon, but oil-based paints can cost as much as $80 per gallon. Smaller kitchens that are 100 square feet cost between $300 and $1,000 to paint the cabinets, whereas large kitchens of 400 square feet can cost up to $4,000.  

A combination of different things will give you the smoothest paint finish. Cleaning properly, sanding, using the right paint and paintbrush, straining the paint, and using select paint additives will all contribute to a smooth paint finish. If you’re not confident in your DIY ability, you can always hire a local interior painter to do the job for you.
