Customers say: Quality work

"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"In renovating our beach cottage in Warwick, RI we found the roof needed structural work. Building inspector required a structural engineered plan. Adam was easy to communicate with. He was timely with his plan and follow up inspection. He was also available by text and phone for questions during the project. He was great to work with!"

"After an unusual situation arose at my home, I was concerned about the possibility of structural damage caused by drilling and new construction at an adjacent lot. After receiving a recommendation for Veitas Engineers from a trusted source, I called and scheduled an appointment. I am so thankful that I did. I continue to be impressed with the amount of time that the two engineers spent at my house, closely inspecting the exterior and interior. Within days, I received a 16-page detailed report which included drawings, photographs, recommendations, and action items. I was so pleased when I saw that the action items were categorized as structural and non-structural, that is, that the engineers included items beyond my actual structural concerns. I used the report when working with a contractor to follow up on the recommendations and action items. The contractor was impressed with the quality, clarity, and scope of the report. I am so happy that I chose Veitas Engineers!"

"Dana was great to work with. And his sub-contractors were great as well. He built our house on budget and on time. Two big factors for me. Made suggestions when asked and most of the time we used his suggestions. Very knowledgeable. I can go on and on. Great company."

"From the first contact until the final payment everything about my experience with NE Renovations was EXEMPLARY.  I have lived in different states and different countries where I have had reason to employ contractors over the years, and I can say, without a doubt, that NE Renovations are SUPERIOR in every department.  Bill, Kenny, Mark and Anthony were COURTEOUS, EFFICIENT, SKILLED CRAFTSMEN; unobtrusive while simultaneously involving me, in as much as I wanted to be involved, each step of the way; no task was too trivial or too difficult, even jobs that were challenging i.e. finding extremely hard to find no longer manufactured parts was approached and attended to with SUCCESS, ENTHUSIASM and a POSITIVE attitude.  Every job was undertaken with a SMILE and PROFESSIONALISM.  Richard consistently communicated via email and telephone throughout in a PLEASANT and PROMPT manner. Mark and Anthony removed old appliances and some hard to get rid of junk in my garage at NO EXTRA COST.  Kenny worked METHODICALLY, PROFESSIONALLY and so  QUIETLY I would forget he was there, and Bill, what a gem ! - A MASTER CRAFTSMAN who can turn his hand to any job, who begins and ends his day with a smile and a kind word.THE FINAL COST WAS AS ESTIMATED DESPITE THAT I ADDD QUITE A FEW JOBS ALONG THE WAY - AT NO EXTRA COST! The work was done in a timely manner and for the first time in my experience with contractors it was an absolute pleasure to greet this team of craftsmen each morning at 8am. I am an extremely happy customer and would highly recommend NE Renovations. The result of their efforts is apparent in my now BEAUTIFULLY and PROFESSIONALLY renovated home."

"We started with a handyman company, but when the job proved too much for his level of expertise, we had him just tear down the current porch and turned to a real construction company to do the rebuild.  Their recommendation that we hire a civil engineer to design the mechanics of the buttressing work was their best advice.  We are now confident that this house will last for more generations.

"

They assigned different contractors to do the construction work. One of the contractors said that the job was too big and that they could not do it, which was fine. I respect that. The secretary stated that she would try to find other contractors to do the job. The owner came and walked through the house and we spoke about what needed to be done in the house. I did not feel confident in his contractor because he seemed that he did not know what he was doing. I wanted him to do one specific thing. The owner wanted to take down the whole wall. I just wanted to reopen a small section. I started to feel like they were pushing me. For those reasons I felt uncomfortable and did not go with them. The quote was detailed.

"They were prompt and responsive. The technician came out to see the crack in our basement wall, explained to me how to remove more sheetrock so he could do the job, and made an appointment to do the repair. He was exactly on time for both the estimate and the repair. Once the repair was complete, he gave me tips on repairing the sheetrock. He also gave me the discount on my coupon even though it had expired."

FAQs for structural engineering projects in Rochester, MA

No, it’s not legal for unlicensed individuals to conduct structural calculations for buildings or building repairs. Not only do licensing requirements prevent DIYers from tackling this project, but mistakes can also be extremely dangerous and put your property and anyone inside or near it at risk of severe injury or even death. You should always hire a licensed and certified local structural engineer to make structural calculations.

Yes, all states require structural engineers to carry the proper license, with specifics determined by each state. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to confirm that the structural engineer you’re considering holds the required licensing to tackle your job. Hiring an unlicensed structural engineer will not only cause issues with permits but it could also lead to an unsafe building. The cost of a professional, licensed, and experienced engineer is well worth the investment.

The process of hiring a structural engineer starts by finding reliable professionals in your area and comparing quotes from at least three of them. From there, you can narrow down your selection by asking some leading questions:

  • Do you have experience working in my specific area?

  • Do you have professional indemnity insurance?

  • What will your structural report cover?

  • Do you charge a flat fee for a structural report or by the hour?

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Do you have a list of customer references?

Structural engineers typically charge between $100 and $250 per hour, but many jobs won’t be based on a per-hour fee. Instead, the structural engineer will offer a flat rate for the inspection and structural calculations. The flat rate for a structural engineer costs an average of around $550, but you could see prices ranging from $300 to $800, depending on the complexity of your project and how easy it is to access certain parts of your home for the inspection.

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.
