"I wish I could give Cotton Tree Service more than five stars. They have removed 5 trees from our property on two separate occasions. Four were over 30 feet tall. All the trees were removed carefully and professionally with heavy equipment and yet our lawn was not damaged. The hard working crew was very polite, professional and knowledgeable. The owner Tom was on site to operate the large crane and his skill was amazing to watch. There will be more tree removal in our future and Cotton Tree Service will be the only one we will call. Whether you should remove the roots of a dead tree depends on whether they’re damaging nearby areas. For instance, if the roots continue to grow near sidewalks, driveways, or the foundation of your home, they can cause damage. If you want to plant something else in that spot, removing the roots can make it easier for the new tree or plant to grow.

We recommended removing the tree stump because it can create many of the same problems as a dead, decaying tree. Those stumps can rot over time, creating an attraction for bugs, fungi, and other unwelcome yard guests.

If your tree specialist says that a hardwood tree is in excellent condition, you may be able to use the stump as a decoration for years to come. However, it’s still important to keep an eye on it, and arrange to remove the stump if it starts to show significant signs of decay.

You must cut into the ground and around the full circumference of the bush stump to keep it from growing back. If you're concerned about the size of the underground roots or are unable to remove them manually, you can also treat the root ball with an herbicide. Speak with a local landscaper about whether the remaining roots will interfere with your garden plans or threaten to bring the plant back to life.

Your neighbor is not in a good position to know if your trees are truly dead or pose any kind of danger. That’s why hiring an arborist or tree service expert can be such an important part of the process. If the trees are still alive and don’t pose any threat, you’re in the clear (but you may want to document and photograph everything in case events turn sour down the road).

But if a tree is visibly dead and near the property line, you should remove it to be safe. If a dead tree falls on a neighbor’s property, they may have grounds to sue for negligence. If any branches on trees have died, it’s a good idea to cut them back for similar reasons.
