I started Amherst Lockworks from the ground up in 1990 after completing courses in locksmithing through the Door Hardware Institute 1988 and Foley Belsaw institute 1989, I was given a CORI back ground check and approved to be a Certified/bonded Locksmith in 1990. Since then, I have operated my business primarily from mobile service vans, traveling to my customers-bringing my van, which is fully stocked with Key cutting machines, Master keying kits, Boring jigs, Locksmith tools, locks and hardware to your home or office. Rekeying a lock is less expensive than replacing the whole unit. The cost to rekey is about $50 to $100 when you hire a pro or as little as $10 if you DIY. The cost to change a lock is $130 to $500, depending on the hardware you select.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key: 

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key. 

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Research suggests most burglars look for signs of a security system before going in, although the presence of a security system doesn’t automatically mean they won’t enter the home. However, a security system with cameras can decrease the chance of a burglary overall.

While a strong conventional deadbolt offers enough security for most homeowners, if you’re looking for extra features beyond just simple locking, smart deadbolts are the way to go. Smart deadbolts allow for keyless entry using your phone or a code, remote access in case someone is locked out, and features like temporary access codes, automatic locking, tamper alerts and entry-exit monitoring. Smart deadbolts also come with downsides: they rely on batteries and wireless networks and are potentially vulnerable to hacking by skilled home intruders.
