I started Amherst Lockworks from the ground up in 1990 after completing courses in locksmithing through the Door Hardware Institute 1988 and Foley Belsaw institute 1989, I was given a CORI back ground check and approved to be a Certified/bonded Locksmith in 1990. Since then, I have operated my business primarily from mobile service vans, traveling to my customers-bringing my van, which is fully stocked with Key cutting machines, Master keying kits, Boring jigs, Locksmith tools, locks and hardware to your home or office. Since 1990, my base of loyal customers has steadily increased in both the commercial and residential aspects of whom have kept the phones ringing and allowed me to stock more brands of locks, along with commercial hardware which includes panic bars, door closers and access control along with a good selection of key blanks to meet your needs over the years. My locksmith business operates 830-5, M-F. By request, I have and will continue to make special arrangements to accommodate your busy schedule and please feel free to call and ask any question that you can think of. Mention Angie's List and i'll take $10.00 bucks off your next Lock installed ." -Derek Lauder, Owner, Certified Locksmith.

"Derek was great. Had to accommodate schedule changes due to bad weather. He was prompt, did a great job, and gave us plenty of extra keys. Extremely happy with his work."

West Hartford Lock has been a staple in greater Hartford for over 80 years. Our experienced sales team, project managers and locksmiths are available to you for all your door and architectural hardware needs. Family owned and operated, service and attention to detail is our top priority. Please come in and visit our showroom or contact us at any time.

"Needed to have several doors re-keyed for my daughter's new home. Had terrible experience with another "locksmith" and did not use them. Called West Hartford Lock, my husband spoke with the office manage, Kathy Cerruto. Could not have been nicer, more professional, or more helpful. Someone went to my daughter's a few days later and re-keyed several locks in not too much time. VERY reasonable. Would absolutely recommend and use them again."

"i have copied the complaint I have filed with the BBB. When I spoke to the manager at champion on Monday he said someone would get back to me by the end of the week. Here it is late Friday and I’ve heard nothing. I left a message on Monday with a customer service rep who’s voice mail said I’d get a call back in 24 hours but have had no return call yet. Even if the company reserves the right to cancel, their our bad oh well attitude and not even trying to work out some kind of resolution for their mistakes is the most unacceptable and unprofessional part of the whole experience with them. I added a picture of my contract with them so everyone can see how straight forward it shows what I was told I was paying for. Here is the BBB complaint Company rep gave a price of $24562 on vinyl siding during an in home sales presentation. At that time I explained I was not ready to purchase due to still looking at colors but also wanted to add on doors. Rep called his manager who said doors would have to be done separately either way but gave a price in the low $20’s over the phone if I signed up for the siding today. I passed and called the rep back a day or two later to come back to show us door options so we could add them on and get a total price. Rep came back on 3-13-19. We picked out 3 doors and he gave us a total price for everything of $29599. Contract was drafted up and signed and a deposit of $8880 was given by credit card. Was told by the rep there will be someone coming out to confirm measurements and price may fluctuate slightly if he under measured but was pretty confident he was close to accurate. On 3-15 some one came out and measured for the doors and remeasureed for the siding. He called back on 3-19 stating he had to come by and recheck one more measurement but I didn’t need to be home. That is the last I heard from the company till I called on 4-08-19 as we were told 3-5 weeks. First call was left on hold for 20 minutes, second call was told they would call me right back, made third call after waiting over an hour for call back only to find out my contact had been voided because they under charged me for the project. They said the rep misquoted the whole project and I was never charged for the doors even though the contract I signed shows I was. Said there was nothing they could do and they have a right to just void the contract if the so choose. Which they did without even telling me. The manager who acknowledged giving the rep the low price the first day out refused to even honor that price saying he gave it out not knowing all the information but gave it any ways. Not only did the rep supposingly misquote the job the manager gave an even lower one in order to close the sale. Now the cost they are telling me is approximately $29000 plus another $11000 for the doors. That’s a far distance from the original $24000 for just the siding that the rep and the even lower price the manager gave from the first visit. Manager said it would be at least 4 days before anyone else above him could even get back to me about this. He wouldn’t give me anymore names of the next people in line I could call. Just kept telling me he would give my information to the right people and they would call me. Stated I would be having a lawyer look into this and finally got a name and number of some customer service rep."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Standard residential deadbolt locks come with a steel bolt that locks your door into place using a key (or keypad) on one side and a thumb turn on the other. When you lock it, the bolt slides into a strike plate on your door jamb to secure your door shut.

There’s no set time limit for when you should replace your locks, but there are several indicators that it’s time to swap them. If you’re moving into a new home or have a roommate moving out, it’s smart to change the locks. If you experience a break-in or other crime, you should change it then too, or if you ever lose your keys. Eventually, locks can wear out, so it’s ideal to replace them after several years of use or one of these circumstances occurs.

Yes, but adding a deadbolt to some door materials, like steel, may make installation a little bit trickier. For these materials, you will want to hire a locksmith to do the work for you, but be aware that they may charge an additional fee of $25 to $50 or more.

As with any computer, smart locks can be hacked by someone with the technical skills to do so, but most people do not have that ability, making smart locks relatively safe. If you have any concerns about a compromised smart lock, opt for an encrypted smart lock, change your Wi-Fi password, and make sure that you only give out your password to trusted family and friends.

While a strong conventional deadbolt offers enough security for most homeowners, if you’re looking for extra features beyond just simple locking, smart deadbolts are the way to go. Smart deadbolts allow for keyless entry using your phone or a code, remote access in case someone is locked out, and features like temporary access codes, automatic locking, tamper alerts and entry-exit monitoring. Smart deadbolts also come with downsides: they rely on batteries and wireless networks and are potentially vulnerable to hacking by skilled home intruders.
