"United did a great job with finishing our basement.  We worked mostly with Junior (the project manager).  He met with us to go over what we were looking for and gave us a quote for 25,000 which was a great price and about the price range we was looking for.  We ended up adding more things we wanted later that were not included in the quote which pushed the price up, but we were always comfortable with the price and there were no hidden costs or anything like that.   We ended up adding a floor instead of painted concrete, we upgraded the electrical work (more lights added, LED lights. baseboard heat), added insulation, re-did the steps going down to the basement and a few other things.
We ended up spending around 50,000 with all the extras and cost for materials etc. Junior was great with working with us and getting us quotes for any extra things we wanted to add. He was also very responsive.  Any questions or concerns we had he would answer promptly.  It took about 4 months for the entire project to be done, which was longer than we wanted or expected but to be fair we never gave them a hard date to when it needed to be done by.  They started off super fast and got alot done in a short amount of time, but mid way through they started to slow down.  I told Junior about it and they ended the project very fast too.  So as long as your upfront about how quickly you need it done, they will get it done for you.  The actually work was great and the basement looks spectacular.  Any little issues they fixed at the end.  For example, the faucet we installed wasn't flowing properly, I told Junior and he had the plumber come back to fix it (on Columbus day no less!).
We will def use United again in the future if we have any other construction projects."

"Pro Home Services was extremely professional right from the start. Eric came out to give an estimate and was extremely knowledgeable about the work that we wanted done. He explained everything thoroughly, which was reassuring. He also provided homes that they had worked on and references for us so that we could feel good about making the right decision. Eric was easy to contact as were the other workers. Once the contract and deposit were signed, we did notice the urgency of responding to our calls and emails was not there any more. However, we were still pleased with their work. We were told the project would start on a Monday but it was the week of the hurricane. We weren't contacted at all that week, even though we understood that they would be delayed. After waiting to hear from them, we called and they told us a new date that they would start, which they followed through with. From the beginning, we kept saying that we wanted the house to look exactly like it had originally but newer. After we came home on the first day of the siding being put up, the width was larger than it had looked originally. This was very frustrating since we kept saying we wanted it to be the same as it had been. Eric explained that the width of the original siding was different in different places so he rounded up to the 5 inch boards. I wish he has clearly stated this to me since I had just assumed that what he wrote in the contract would match what the original siding had looked like. We grew to love the look (especially since we had no money to fix it :) Overall, the worker(s) arrived early each day and cleaned up each evening. They were very helpful when we had questions and the final product looks amazing! They had promised to paint the PVC trim where it didn't match the hardie trim color, which they couldn't do since the project had gotten pushed back and it was too cold. This was unfortunate since they had said they would do the downspouts too but there wasn't anything we could do about the weather. When we had issues come up about the project, they listened and fixed it. They did work above and beyond what other contractors had offered to do. All of our windows got new flashing, we got our porch roof replaced, and they cleaned up some insulation that was sticking out of our attic windows. They even left the dumpster for us to use when they were done. We definitely plan to use them in the future if we need to! You won't go wrong if you choose Pro Home!"

This is probably not your roof:
But, if your roof has damaged flashing, missing shingles, curling, blistering, buckling, rotting and algae growth (which appears as dark or greenish stains), you probably need a new roof.
If you’re roofer doesn’t talk about these, you’re talking to the wrong guy:

"Vista was on time to all appointments.  The job grew from a new roof, to insulating the roof over the cathedral ceiling and bringing a saggy sun room roof line up to code.  My husband did a great deal of research regarding products and applications.  He asked for their recommendations before stating what he thought should be done.  My husband was pleased with the feedback from Vista on the proper way to correct the roof line as well as the insulation alternatives for a cathedral ceiling.  Colors were selected and a date was given for installation.
Installation went rather well.  Vista installed the wrong color drip edge.  My husband pointed out the error.  Vista stripped the material and reinstalled.  Luckily the shingles were not installed yet.  In our quote we asked for ice and water barrier over 100% of the roof.  He noticed it was only 2 courses up on the roof.  This was pointed out and the foreman quickly corrected the problem.
The crew was very nice and courteous.  As with any construction work, we feel that we need to keep an eye on the progress, so I don't think the errors of the drip edge and ice/water barrier were a big deal.  But if my husband was not home, it would have been missed.  This was all miscommunication between their salesman, distribution house and construction manager.  Overall they did a great job."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"

End result was fantastic. The construction took 2-3 weeks longer than estimated- some delays due to Hurricane Sandy (materials), some due to personnel not showing up when scheduled.

Also, communication with designer could have been better- several times we had to pull information rather than receiving it proactively.
However, any concerns we experienced were quickly and professionally addressed and rectified. All personnel we encountered were excellent, friendly and professional.
Since this was a new experience for us, comparisons are difficult. Overall, very pleased with the final product and would certainly recommend Kirby.

Mighty Duct was founded in April 1994 by heating professionals who saw a need for air duct cleaning. We sought out the most powerful vacuum equipment available in order to perform an efficient and thorough job. Because we have the proper equipment air duct cleaning is, for the client, a clean and routine process.\n\nAll of Mighty Duct's technicians are trained from the NADCA standards and adhere to a proven process that has brought value to thousands of customers. It is the goal of every Mighty Duct technician to provide friendly, neat and effective air duct cleaning services that will leave our customers "breathing easier!" We are fully insured and privately owned. Duct cleaning is our primary business. There are many other companies out there who have duct cleaning as an added service, but we think that is short sighted, and believe we should focus on investigating more in state of the art equipment, and dedicate our time to continuing to learn more about our field. We'd rather be the best at one thing, than "acceptable" in several. As a successful private business, we have resources to invest in the future. We will bring you exceptional duct cleaning services at a reasonable cost, so all can enjoy the benefits of great air quality.

"Brad Stearns promptly answered my phone calls, kept me informed on exactly when he woudl be stopping by, and came to give an estimate. While he was there he happily looked at some other parts of the house and gave some advice on other jobs I was considering having done in the future (remodeling an attic, removing the vinyl siding, having the walls insulated). He emailed a detailed estimate and when we accepted his bid, got his crew our within a week. Originally it seemed we would able to replace only the 4x8 beam, but when his crew discovered that the 4x4 sitting on top of it was rotted as well, he contacted me to tell me he thought a laminated beam would be needed, that this would cost around $300 more than the original estimate, and got my permission to proceed. His crew was very experienced, put down a tarp to protect the freshly painted porch, and finished the job on time. Brad stopped by himself to see whether we were satisfied with the job. I certainly plan to call him when the next project or repair comes along."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Insulating your ducts offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved energy efficiency: Duct insulation prevents energy losses, reducing heating and cooling costs.

  • Cost savings: Lower energy bills make insulation a cost-effective investment.

  • Environmental benefits: Enhanced efficiency reduces your carbon footprint.

  • Consistent comfort: Insulated ducts help maintain a stable indoor temperature.

  • Better indoor air quality: Reduced allergens and pollutants improve air quality.

If you need to insulate behind finished walls, the best option will likely be to have an insulation professional install blown-in insulation. The installation requires small holes cut in your wall, after which the installer can blow loose-fill insulation into the void. After the installation, you’ll have minor drywall patching, which shouldn’t cost more than $100. Compared to ripping down the existing drywall, using a different type of insulation, and replacing and finishing the drywall, this should save you hundreds or even thousands, depending on the size of the room you’re insulating.

The heat loss through a poorly insulated attic when you’re running your furnace or heat pump during cold weather can be as high as 25%. This means you could see significantly higher energy costs to make up for this heat loss. The cost of adding insulation to the attic may eventually pay for itself through lower energy bills. If you decide to add a radiant barrier too, the radiant barrier cost may also pay for itself over time.

The most affordable way to insulate a garage involves choosing cost-effective materials like fiberglass, which comes in batts or rolls and is relatively easy to install. You can often install this type of insulation without needing to add drywall, which helps reduce costs. While a DIY approach might seem cheapest, hiring a professional installer can be highly cost-effective. Experts can accurately determine your garage's specific insulation needs and ensure the best results for your investment, often using batt insulation for the bulk of the project.

Closed-cell spray foam insulation itself serves as a vapor barrier (or vapor retarder). However, you may need to install a vapor barrier if you have open-cell spray foam insulation. When in doubt, work with a professional insulation contractor, as they can provide more detail about the specific needs of your home in your climate.
