"We couldn't be happier with our stone walkway and steps. Ross was collaborative and communicative throughout all phases of the project, from sketching out designs to choosing materials to actually doing the work. His craftsmanship is excellent. His attention to detail is remarkable. He was timely and his prices are reasonable. We would hire him again if we needed more stone work. The end result is gorgeous!"

"Duke's did a great job! They arrived at the job early and were very efficient at cleaning out the storage unit. They were professional and friendly. I was very happy to be using a local company, also. I would definitely hire Duke's again, and would highly recommend them to anyone needing any of their services."

"Did a great job on small landscape project on edge of lawn. Came when they were supposed to , work was well done, professional, and looks great. Also took our lawn which was in total disrepair, and turned it from a disaster into a new lawn by aerating, slice seeding and using a correct seed for our area, which was the reason the lawn failed in the first place. He also followed up with directions on how to handle the new lawn. Very easy to work with, and we are planning on using him to maintain our lawn."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

If you wish to break up a cracked or broken paver for removal, you can use a hammer or mallet and a chisel to fragment the paver. As you’re working, be careful not to disturb surrounding pavers; the key is to work slowly and steadily and remove the broken pieces gently. You should also wear a mask and goggles to ensure that no dust gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth as you work.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The driveway apron is a technical term referring to where a private driveway meets the public street. If there is a sidewalk in front of the house, the driveway apron is typically on the opposite side of the public sidewalk from the driveway itself.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.
