"Pro Home Services was extremely professional right from the start. Eric came out to give an estimate and was extremely knowledgeable about the work that we wanted done. He explained everything thoroughly, which was reassuring. He also provided homes that they had worked on and references for us so that we could feel good about making the right decision. Eric was easy to contact as were the other workers. Once the contract and deposit were signed, we did notice the urgency of responding to our calls and emails was not there any more. However, we were still pleased with their work. We were told the project would start on a Monday but it was the week of the hurricane. We weren't contacted at all that week, even though we understood that they would be delayed. After waiting to hear from them, we called and they told us a new date that they would start, which they followed through with. From the beginning, we kept saying that we wanted the house to look exactly like it had originally but newer. After we came home on the first day of the siding being put up, the width was larger than it had looked originally. This was very frustrating since we kept saying we wanted it to be the same as it had been. Eric explained that the width of the original siding was different in different places so he rounded up to the 5 inch boards. I wish he has clearly stated this to me since I had just assumed that what he wrote in the contract would match what the original siding had looked like. We grew to love the look (especially since we had no money to fix it :) Overall, the worker(s) arrived early each day and cleaned up each evening. They were very helpful when we had questions and the final product looks amazing! They had promised to paint the PVC trim where it didn't match the hardie trim color, which they couldn't do since the project had gotten pushed back and it was too cold. This was unfortunate since they had said they would do the downspouts too but there wasn't anything we could do about the weather. When we had issues come up about the project, they listened and fixed it. They did work above and beyond what other contractors had offered to do. All of our windows got new flashing, we got our porch roof replaced, and they cleaned up some insulation that was sticking out of our attic windows. They even left the dumpster for us to use when they were done. We definitely plan to use them in the future if we need to! You won't go wrong if you choose Pro Home!"

This is probably not your roof:
But, if your roof has damaged flashing, missing shingles, curling, blistering, buckling, rotting and algae growth (which appears as dark or greenish stains), you probably need a new roof.
If you’re roofer doesn’t talk about these, you’re talking to the wrong guy:

"Jeff and his crew were wonderful! I couldn't be happier with both the results and with Jeff, Bruce and the rest of the guys. I was very nervous going into this project, because my home dates back to the 1830's and I didn't want to loose any of the charm or character while at the same time I wanted the energy savings and ease of use of newer products. Jeff explained what my options were, and the pro's and con's of each, and helped me to make an informed decision. My windows now function and look beautiful, my siding is vinyl but you would never know by looking at it and there is energy saving insulation under it, my roof doesn't leak anymore, and I have an extra room off the kitchen! Jeff, Bruce and the rest of his crew were on time, finished in a timely fashion, cleaned up when the job was finished and kept me informed throughout the process. I would definately hire Jeff and Bruce again!"

"Overall it was a great experience and we've been very pleased with the quality of the end result. Yes it was an expensive, long project but we view it as a great value / investment as we intend to make this our family's home for at least the next 30 years. The renovation has transformed this 100 year old house into a beautiful home that can sustain our modern family lifestyle and green values while appreciating it's vintage "arts & crafts" features. ***** Like an major renovation of this scale, we initially underestimated the scope and cost of our renovation project. We had come up with a guesstimate of about $350k and four months before choosing our build design team. After selecting Sustainable Construction (partnered with Zero-Energy Design for architectural and mechanical system services) based on their commitment to green renovation and positive feedback from other customers, we spent last summer refining the scope of the project and reviewing the architectural and system design plans. By the end of August, we signed contracts for $550k worth of renovation, design, and material costs with detailed project plan, milestones, and completion date for the end of April 2009 (7 months of work). We moved out into a temporary apartment in September and work began in earnest by the end of the month. ***** During the project we met on-site, weekly or biweekly, with Daniel Glickman (owner, SCSI) and/or the project foreman John Matlack, to review progress, discuss issues, and make decisions. We often dropped by early in the morning or after hours to check-in on progress or ask questions. Both Daniel and John were always available and responsive to our questions either in person, by mobile phone, or email. As foreman / project manager, John was a great, detail oriented "taskmaster" insuring quality and timeliness of the work performed by the various subcontractors and craftsmen With SCSI's oversight, all of the completed work from asbestos removal, interior demolition, insulating, HVAC system install, electrical work, plumbing, tiling, window installation, carpentry, plaster, sheet rock, painting, paving/brickwork and cleanup was of a very high quality. ***** The project was completed on time (actually a week or so early) and on budget. ***** We would highly recommend SCSI, his team and all of the subcontractors he employed for other projects."

"Vista has come to our house, especially a particular gentleman. Really knowledgeable, very professional. They do several different things. I have had them out to do estimates on gutters. We have not hired them for anything. To give you an idea, when they've come out I was very happy to open the door and see it was the same guy that has come several times to do several things. I interview several people. Not only did he come, and it's a little confusing to me because it has to do with ventilation and insulation, and excuse my language but there is a whole freaking science to this thing, but the owner actually came out. Not only did they keep in communication by computer, the owner actually came out and reinforced the whole education and what needs to be done. I was really thrilled with that. I thought that was beyond the call of duty. I am sorry I was not able to go with them, but I would certainly say as far as customer service relationship, excellent. The information was excellent. Not bothered by the fact that he had to come out more than one time for the same kind of information. I've never had the opportunity to hire them. But I've never been disappointed. They will take the time, they will talk to you, they will educate you, and they will actually give you the best price they can possibly give you. I got educated so that when my  husband came home I could explain to him what is going on. I can't rate their work, but as far as their generosity of time and caring, it's off the charts. I don't know about price because this is a whole new area to me. They were amazing. I have to tell you I have had them out several times as I said, it's Vista Home Improvements so they do several things, but I feel kind of bad that I am yet to hire them. I am trying to think exactly where Vista is out of, but for the owner to com about to your house. We're talking about a wrap around attic. We are talking about getting on your hands and knees and crawling around."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"Called several contractors and was subsequently referred to Morgan. He immediately came over and provided an estimate. Work went exactly as he promised, including timeliness, progress, costs, and overall professionalism. The insulation job was horrible and messy and probably the type of job no contractor wants if they can avoid it but they completed it with no complaints and my house is incredibly warmer as a result which is exactly what I hoped for. My new deck is beautiful, he even suggested copper caps for the posts which made the inexpensive option of pressure-treated wood I opted for look more upscale. Morgan explained all aspects of the project to me and made several functional suggestions for additional work I will be proceeding with vs. the aesthetic work I had in mind right now. Being very reticent to hire a contractor for any extensive work I can say I am very very pleased and would recommend him unequivocally."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.

If the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, it will take around six hours for your pipes to freeze—and they might even burst. That’s why keeping your mobile home’s temperature around 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit is necessary, even if you’re leaving it vacant for the winter. In addition, having ample skirting around the mobile home's underbelly will help keep pipes insulated during the winter.

Structural insulated panels and rigid foam boards have the highest R-value of any insulation that contractors commonly use, with R-values reaching up to around 8.0. These types of insulation are best in extremely cold climates, but they’re generally preferred for new construction, as they can be challenging to retrofit. Blown-in and loose fill insulation provide the next best insulative value, provided the installation is done properly. It’s important to choose an insulation type that meets your needs based on climate, as maximizing R-value may not always be financially worthwhile if you live in a moderate climate.

Energy-efficient homes generally have higher appraisals and appeal to buyers.

If you need to insulate behind finished walls, the best option will likely be to have an insulation professional install blown-in insulation. The installation requires small holes cut in your wall, after which the installer can blow loose-fill insulation into the void. After the installation, you’ll have minor drywall patching, which shouldn’t cost more than $100. Compared to ripping down the existing drywall, using a different type of insulation, and replacing and finishing the drywall, this should save you hundreds or even thousands, depending on the size of the room you’re insulating.
