MA Design & Construction CoMA Design & Construction is a great company with great people. They take care of their customers and work **** ** their projects to deliver the best results. Marc’s team started working on our house right before the pandemic. The team continued working while maintaining all safety measures, and he kept us updated on the progress with daily calls and messages. Raquel worked on the design, doing research and coming up with multiple options for every design choice, all with a smile and a genuine desire to come up with the best possible look for the house. We could not be happier with the final result and truly recommend that you hire them too.- alex f.

Beantown Home Improvements, Inc.Beantown completed a whole house residing project and new deck for our home. Jim and crew were totally professional from start to finish, efficient, had good communication, and quality craftsmanship. They were on time and on budget, no curveballs. We are totally satisfied with the results, our home looks fantastic and we have received multiple compliments from our neighbors. I would recommend checking out Beantown for any of your home transformation projects.- Alex S.

Beantown Home Improvements, Inc.I first contracted Jim several years ago to execute my vinyl siding and roofing project. Most recently his crew installed laminate flooring in four rooms. The work has been top shelf and each of the crew has been on time, customer focused, good suggestions, and went above and beyond with their efforts in many cases. Jim is a very professional businessman and has never, in all these years, failed to quickly respond to a request or question that I had, even if it did not involve contracting Beantown for pending work. I highly recommend that anyone considering a project of any scope contact Jim.- George H.

AR Home Renovations CorpAndre and his team were phenomenal. Orginally, we thought we only needed a porch column replaced; however, we found quite a bit of rot in the porch ceiling and deck--not great news for a homeowner. Andre and the team went right to work, drafting options, coordinating sub-contractors, and keeping us in the loop. The team was respectful of our house and cleaned up after each day, to the point where it looked as if work hadn't started. It's not often one bonds with contractors, but we actually enjoyed chatting with them throughout the day. They even fixed items that needed repair inside the house that weren't a part of the contract (at no charge!) Without any reservation, I would recommend these guys for complex rehab jobs.- Greg C.

AR Home Renovations CorpAndre is a complete professional. I couldn't be happier with working with anyone else. He has extensive experience and knowledge of the intricacies of building brand new homes and taking old 100+ year homes and remodeling them to be almost indistinguishable from new construction while still maintaining the character to give it a unique charm. He helped with digging a 5 feet foundation from a 220 year old home and understood what needed to be done in order to ensure a safe work environment and to maintain the structural integrity while making it as expansive as possible. More than his extensive skills and experience Andre is just a standup and honest person. He truly cares about the clients he works with and gives great ideas for what would will look nice and takes them through the process from the very beginning pre construction phases to end with excellent customer service. It is rare you come across a builder like Andre!- Hans N.

Beantown Home Improvements, Inc.So I reached out to Beantown Home Improvements in the late summer 2020 while they were finishing up a total residing project on the home next door to me. I spoke directly with the owner James DelPrete and he and his team were total professionals from the very first conversation. I have done numerous home improvement projects over the years and James and his team were knowledgeable, timely, clean with great attention to detail. I would highly recommend Beantown builders... I know I will be coming back to them in the future.- Daniel A.

Step by Step Home Improvement Corp.Geferson is a pleasure to work with. He was recommended to us for a basement bathroom project, and he did an amazing job. He was very patient with our design changes, and when something didn't fit properly he found creative solutions. The finished project is beautiful and two years later looks brand new. Our second project was a complete redo of all the cabinetry in the laundry room, and again it looks perfect. Finally, he did a strange project for us during the pandemic. Our back porch was a disaster underneath, and he cleaned the junk and bad dirt down four inches, put in a trellis and chicken wire, and filled it with clean stones. Voila, instant huge outside playroom for our cats. They absolutely love it. Geferson communicates very well and charges fair prices. He likes to charge only for the labor and actual construction material, and you pick and pay for all the fixtures, paint, tile, etc. That way you get exactly what you want. He is completely insured and bonded, but works by himself with associates coming in when needed. Like all contractors, he does several jobs at once, so he may disappear for a day or two, but we've never felt that things were stretched out too far. We are just starting out on a major rebuild of two more bathrooms, and looking forward to working with Geferson again!- Brian B.

AW Puma Construction & Remodeling LLCI had them build a small sunroom on back of house. We had an old deck falling apart on the back of the house. We decided to have it removed and then build a small three season space that we could enjoy for the colder months. The bathroom needed some TLC and was potentially even original or semi-original. They took care of everything from permitting to finishing. My wife and I are ecstatic with how things turned out and would work with them again.- Brandon D.

E B Window And Siding CoWe just wrapped up a big project with EB Window & Siding - replaced all vinyl siding, shutters, gutters, and trim on our exterior, replaced a few windows, and removed an old balcony and door. Overall, the experience was really terrific. Colin came out a couple of different times to discuss options, timelines, etc. The majority of the work was completed by a crew of 3-4 each day, led by Oscar. It was immediately clear to us that the entire crew took great pride in their work. Oscar was thoughtful about some of the tricker parts of the house and how best to accent different areas with the materials we had selected. Everyone was incredibly courteous, clean, respectful of the property. They never wanted to bother us, but anytime we asked for updates, they’d walk us around the house and describe what was being done. Everything wrapped up on time, despite holidays and inclement weather. In the days that followed, Colin coordinated a few additional people to help out with miscellaneous punch list items, and everything was wrapped up in a timely manner. We interacted with a lot of different people from EB Window & Siding throughout the process, and everyone was top-notch in terms of craftsmanship and customer service. I would highly recommend them to anyone taking on a project like this.- Lisa R.

AW Puma Construction & Remodeling LLCI have known Albert for quite some time and had various issues at my property here. I called and explained the situation and he came out the same day to assess. We had some serious leaking between the shared kitchen and bathroom wall which went extended to the basement. They redid areas of the kitchen, bathroom and basement.- Joseph Z.

It went really well even though the February weather was tough. Everyone from start to finish was professional and kept me informed. I am thrilled with the finished porch and everyone so far has given a thumbs up. The house is one hundred years old so there were some updating and codes to address. Mike and his crew did what needed to be done. The carpenter was amazing and his work was superior. I would certainly recommend.

We had a great experience working with MA Design & Construction. They care about their work and make sure the customer is happy. We recently wrapped up several projects with them – kitchen and half bath remodel, new flooring, adding new recessed lights, new fireplace hearth and painting all of the first floor and stairwells going up and downstairs. From the beginning, both Marc and Raquel were super responsive, often within minutes and many times well outside of business hours. They listened to what we wanted and Raquel, Marc and their tile guy all offered wonderful suggestions that we did not think of. The initial estimate was accurate and within reason. We wound up going a little over because we needed a new sub-panel installed and decided to go with upgraded countertops. This was not because of any inaccurate forecasting. The team was organized and cleaned up every day. On top of everything, they finished the work earlier than we expected! We are very pleased with the result and would not hesitate to work with them again.

I would not recommend this location of ACE handyman. The owner/manager was quick with excuses and BS any time there was an issue. He quoted a price for two jobs- installing a new vanity and floor/tile. He never got back to me. After getting a plumber to install the vanity, I contacted him again about the floor. He claimed to have confused me with another person of similar name. (Even if such person existed, they wouldn't have needed the same, specific job done.) Finally, he sent a guy to do the job, which was perfectly adequate--what a handyman, rather than a trained flooring or bathroom professional, would do. He then sent an invoice for twice the quoted amount even though it was half the job I was quoted for originally, with a incorrect tally of hours and a suspiciously exact $200 charge for 'supplies'. When I clarified that he was charging me for supplies I had given the worker, he claimed the charge was actually for *other* supplies. He did not offer a breakdown of prices. As for the hours charged, he said I was wrong, and further claimed he always charged $100 an hour for employees to leave a job for three hours. At one point the employee broke a part on my newly installed, with all new plumbing, vanity, and I was charged $150 for him to drive to Home Depot for a replacement. We've used many tradesmen in our condo renovation and this is the single most shady outfit I have encountered. You can find great handymen on taskrabbit with guarantees on quotes and work. Do not use these guys.

Joe and his team did a superb job of renovating my bathroom in a 1929 vintage building in Cambridge, MA. The final result is modern and highly functional while looking beautiful in an older building. Joe helped me pick materials and finishes that I would not have discovered on my own. He and his team were respectful of my home making sure that there was as little disruption as possible and wore masks and maintained distance at all times. When I miscommunicated with a house cleaner near the end of the project, Joe did much of the cleaning himself. Above and beyond. Last but not least, the work was finished on time. Amazing. Leslie D.

Winter Hill General Contractors

Super Service
Award 2020
A Super Service Award goes to providers who have achieved and maintained a superior service rating on Angi.
Business Description:
Winter Hill General Contractors is a privately owned business which takes great pride in the personalized, professional relationship that it strives to maintain with it's clients. Our goal is to provide quality workmanship at an affordable fair price. We depend upon word-of-mouth advertising and realize that building up our clientele will only come from happy customers who are satisfied and would recommend our services to their family and friends.
Recent Review:
I don’t feel good about giving bad reviews, since I know there are consequences when a company gets a bad review, and everyone we dealt with at Winter Hill, from the project manager on down were nice people, who I am sure were dealing with many Covid-related issues, as my family was. However, we have been members of Angie’s List for many years, and rely on people like us to give honest reviews. So, I have to be honest in saying that this project turned out to be a bad experience and that we would not use Winter Hill again. The project we hired Winter Hill to work on was a re-model of our existing finished basement. The basement had been finished by the previous owners, but had water issues. So, we were looking for a contractor to rip out the existing drywall and carpet and refinish the basement. We hired a separate contractor to do the basement waterproofing. Since it was just a replacement of the existing basement, we (perhaps naively) expected the project to go fairly smoothly. The process started out fairly well. We received a relatively timely quote from the estimator, although we had to correct the scope of work several times. As it turned out, the estimator left some key items out of their quote that they really should have captured, such as the cost of a plumber. Winter Hill’s quoted price was higher than we had expected to replace an existing finished basement, but the contractor with the lowest price was not going to be able to fit us into his schedule for 6 months, so we chose to go with Winter Hill. The process of ripping out the existing basement went okay, though we had to call a few times to get the contractor out to do the work. The waterproofing contractor finished their work at the end of August 2020. And, after that, is when the problems really started. Most of our problems stemmed from very poor communication. Starting in September, we felt lucky if we could get one piece of the work on the basement construction done each week, and oftentimes whole weeks went by with no work getting accomplished, and little explanation from the contractor. I cannot count the number of times we were told we would hear back from them that evening or the next day, and all we got was silence. My assumption, though I have no concrete proof, is that we were very low on this contractor’s priority list, so that work only got done when their employees were in the middle of other jobs. Regardless, this, in my opinion, relatively simple project, took 8 months to complete (into March 2021) and I fear that it would have taken much longer to complete if I was not constantly calling/texting our project manager to get things moving. Now, if Winter Hill is going to be honest with themselves, I think they would accept this aspect of the review without much rebuttal. We certainly received our share of apologies from them for delays and for people not showing up when they said they would, while the work was ongoing. However, I worry that they will respond by saying that there were things outside of their control that resulted in delays, such as problems we had getting inspectors from the Town to come out. While it is true that there were those types of issues, they caused delays of a few days or weeks, at most. The poor communication also extended to far more than simply when the contractors would show up. As just one example, we selected a vinyl tile for the floor of the basement. The contractor told us that they could not apply vinyl tile on the stairs, and that the stairs would have to be done in wood, but that it would be “no problem” to find a stain to match the vinyl floor. In fact, it turned out that (1) the vinyl tile could be applied to the stairs and (2) the contractor could not match the stain. After seeing the color of the vinyl tile we selected, we asked for weeks (if not months) for samples of the stain they would use on the stairs, so we could give our approval. However, it was only on the day the stairs were installed, while the carpenters were working on the stairs, that we were given a few minutes to select a stain from three choices before the work commenced. Two of the stains were nowhere near the floor color, so we picked the only stain color that was remotely close. After one coat was applied, we stopped the work after seeing it at the end of the day, because the colors did not match at all. After that, we performed our own research and found out that the manufacturer of the vinyl floor made a stair tread in the same style. This is something we should have been told at the start of the project, as that is the option we would have selected. It ultimately turned out that the stair tread was back-ordered from the manufacturer, which caused further delays in completing the project. Even after the tread became available, I had to go purchase the stair tread for myself to get the project moving. Worse, at the close of the project, Winter Hill charged us for a “change order” done on the stairs due to the need to do the work on the stairs twice. It was their fault the work needed to be done twice. Moreover, at no point before or while the “extra” work was being done, did they tell us there would be an additional charge for the stairs or what that would be. I will freely admit that really ****** me off. There are many other examples I can give of communication problems. Winter Hill had to be reminded to do things multiple times, like replacing a door in the basement (part of our contract) or leaving gaps in the insulation for access to the waterproofing system. We had multiple issues with the relatively simple closet where our laundry machines were located, having to explain what we wanted many times in order to make sure it was done correctly. Initially, we were fine with a simple closet, but were talked into putting some shelving on the side by the project manager. Ultimately, the carpenter put a fairly fancy shelving system into the closet, despite that not being necessary. At no time prior to the work being done was it mentioned that there would be an extra charge for the shelves or how much it would cost, but again, we were presented with a bill for that “extra work” at the end of the project. In terms of the quality of work that was performed, I would say it was average to below average. Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that the project manager was rarely at the site to oversee the work. We would see him perhaps once every few months, and hardly ever while the actual work was being done. This led to issues like the vinyl floor not being installed all the way to the doors (you could see the concrete floor right in front of the door), no paint over some of the windows, holes in the drywall not plastered over and painted, a stain on the vinyl floor left over from the stair staining process, cracks in the molding on the stairs, nails sticking out from the stairs, some sagging stair treads, and missing molding on the stairs. Even after the project manager came out to review the work, these were issues that we largely had to identify ourselves and press to get resolved before the project was finished. Neither my wife nor I have any construction experience, so it leaves me to wonder what other issues there might be that we missed. This was our perspective of the experience. Perhaps we expected too much, but we have done other large projects with other contractors that did their work on time and on budget, and where the quality of the work and attention to detail really blew us away. This is one of the most expensive projects we have done on our house, and we expected better service and quality than we received.
