"Peter and his crew were great. Peter was prompt in responding to my inquiry and came out to the house to walk through the lead report and work that needed to be done with me. He gave me a number of options for remediating things and showed me where we could do things in a less expensive manner--explaining the costs and benefits of the different approaches. For example, in one area he told me it was going to cost a significant amount for him to remediate and that it would ultimately be much cheaper for me to replace a section of wood railing instead of remediating the paint. This was to my benefit and his detriment, so I really appreciated it. His crew remediated 15 historic windows and they fixed some cracked panes of glass without my even asking. Peter was very fair, always in communication, and they completed the work promptly and professionally. I highly recommend."

Veteran owned and operated with over a decade of experience in the demolition and environmental services.

"The 1964 bulkhead I had out back was replaced a year ago, but the wood and insulation underneath (the ceiling of the walkway underground to my basement under the back living room) took in water damage and the area was very musty for years. Tom Morneault of Morneault Environmental was the only guy I could find that would not only treat the wood to remove anything growing on it/get rid of the smell, but his team also removed old wood and insulation and re-insulated for me as part of the deal, which was still hundreds of dollars cheaper than the other companies I talked to, which would only remove the old wood and insulation, they don't put anything back in. Tom's team was here by 8:30 this morning and by 2pm they were done and it looks fantastic and smells crisp and clean. They didn't even stop for breaks or have to make any trips to get supplies, they had them all in the van, including the insulation boards. Very highly recommended if anyone is in the same situation."

Providing Home Inspection and Radon Testing services on Cape Cod. Ken Amelin is the principle, founder, and owner of Mid-Cape Home Inspection Services, Inc. Ken has more than 25 years of experience in the real estate and construction industry. Ken has a bachelor’s degree in engineering, is a MA licensed construction supervisor, and licensed home improvement contractor. “I strive to provide my clients with the information and documentation they need for any discussions or negotiations that may result from the home inspection.” Discovery of the conditions and a written report prepared in a clear and professional manner is the key to a successful home inspection.

"Unfortunately, I never got to meet w/Ken. I scheduled an appt. 2 weeks out w/the receptionist, Joan. I live in NY & am traveling to MA for the appt. Joan texted to confirm.I mentioned I may need to reschedule due to work. She offered to reschedule the following week.I told her I'd call her back to confirm. Within an hour I called & confirmed the original appt. As a courtesy, I mentioned I didn't anticipate traffic, but, if there was a problem, we had one another’s phone #'s to advise. I re-confirmed the pricing & was off somewhat because I hadn’t written it down. This appeared to irritate Joan. She tersely corrected me(as if I were haggling the price-I wasn’t).She then said,"I've been doing this a long time.I don't have a good feeling about this. This isn't going to work out." and she hung up on me.I was dumfounded. Soil, Water & Air Technologies provides solutions to customers in need of vapor intrusion services. We custom design sub slab depressurization systems to effectively mitigate radon gas, TCE, petroleum vapors, and various other VOC's. Most real estate transactions, financing and/or re-financing activities require an environmental review which includes air quality testing. Our experienced office staff understands the need for quick, complete, and accurate information in order to provide solutions so transactions are not put at risk. We offer detailed upfront pricing, best in class warranties, and proudly offer discounts to senior citizens, service members and repeat customers.

"Be careful. I called to have a radon mitigation system installed and the sales rep on the phone took down the information and scheduled the appointment. I was upfront about an interior drain being installed. When the technician arrived, he said he'd be happy to install the system, but that it would be worthless because of the interior drainage system. I then received a $200 invoice for the site visit. Frustrating scenario to have a sales rep schedule the appointment, knowing full-well that I had an interior drain, and then the technician tell me there's no point to install a mitigation system, but then charge me for the inconvenience of it all."

Nauset Environmental is a professional environmental investigation/testing company providing services for the indoor environment - residential and commercial. Our investigation services are offered without conflict of interest since we are not looking for additional cleanup business after we provide a "free" evaluation. We are staffed by independently certified professionals evaluated by a separate organization that looks at our experience, training and continuing education, etc. before issuing a certification. Following our initial inspection, at a fixed price, our work with verbal reporting is done 85-90% of the time. Should that initial inspection find conditions that call for additional investigation, sampling, laboratory analysis, reporting, etc. we will describe what we have found and obtain prior approval before expanding the services provided. NOTE that travel expenses, with prior customer approval, are added to initial inspection jobs beyond 50 miles from our East Orleans office. Additional DBAs - Nauset Environmental Services, NES.

Most people stress over home improvements. We make it easy and affordable. The exterior home experts at Couto Construction have been beautifying homes across Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Rhode Island for more than 30 years. We've helped thousands of homeowners, and we're here for you.

"Unfortunately my experience with Couto Construction has proven to be the costliest mistake I’ve ever made, in terms of money and stress. I would never recommend them for any large job of any complexity or requiring good craftsmanship. After interviewing three contractors for extensive exterior work on my house, Couto Construction, although coming in with the highest estimate, was selected based on the company’s overall great reviews on Angi’s List and high Better Business Bureau rating. The company's representatives also seemed to understand the project goal. The co-owner expressed enthusiasm about working on what he called a “legacy project” and assured me that the company had workmen with the necessary skills to complete the job well. The contract was signed July 18, 2020. Work began January 22, 2021 and stopped March 10, 2021, totaling approximately 29 working days. Work on the front of the house was not completed pending agreement on an acceptable work plan and estimate for repair of the front porch, which was not able to be assessed until the aluminum siding had been stripped. This work was dealt with in a separate contract. The crews were very hard working but the emphasis was on speed over quality, resulting in careless mistakes and mediocre workmanship. On April 10, 2021 an email was sent to the owners of Couto Construction expressing concern with the quality of the work done to date, much of which became fully apparent after the snow had melted from the roof and the temperatures began to get warmer. These issues included chipped and lifting roof shingles; peaks and valleys along the newly installed ridge vent; bent, dented and dog-earred drip edges; and warped, lifting siding shingles. While the company has addressed some of these issues, its response has been slow, incomplete and of mixed success. Between April 21 and September 7, 2021, Couto workmen spent approximately 12-15 days on site and as many days in meetings or text message exchanges in response to my inquiries about when these issues would be fully addressed. Typically a workman would show up for 1-2 days, then weeks would go by with no word from the contractor until I texted or phoned, then the pattern would repeat itself. Rectifying the issues with my contract has clearly been secondary to quickly turning over smaller, more lucrative projects. To date, about ¾ of the roof issues have been addressed with mixed results; and no viable solution to the shingle siding problems were found. Though the siding was not installed according to the instructions on the product packaging, the contractor is stating that the shingles were faulty (which is being denied by the manufacturer) and were already warped out coming out of the box. If that was the case, a professional installer should not have put a warped product up in the first place. In February 2022 two options were presented to Couto to resolve the siding stalemate. Option 1 proved unfeasible and the company has been silent on option 2 since March. It is outrageous that I should still be dealing with this 1 ½ years after work began and almost 2 years after the contract was originally signed. I cannot express my level of frustration with this company."

FAQs for radon detection and reduction projects in Harwich Port, MA

You can buy DIY radon test kits from a home improvement store and conduct radon testing, but these tests are often inaccurate. No matter the result, you should supplement DIY testing with professional radon detection and analysis. DIYers only have access to passive radon tests, which aren’t as reliable as active tests that professionals use. Plus, it’s very easy for DIYers to make mistakes during testing, leading to inaccurate results. If you’re moving into a new home, have concerns about radon, or are due for an updated test, hire a professional.

Radon testing costs depend on whether you hire a professional radon inspector or DIY test. You can expect to pay $150 to $800 to hire a local radon inspector, and home-testing kits range in price from $15 to $250 from home improvement stores. However, it’s best to trust a professional inspector with this task to ensure accurate results. Plus, if you have radon in your home, your testing company can develop a mitigation protocol to keep you and your family safe from the dangerous gas, so it’s well worth the money to hire a professional.

If radon is present in your home, you can expect to pay around $1,000 for a radon mitigation system or between $780 and $1,250 in most cases. The exact price will depend on the severity of the radon leak, home size, and the protocol the radon specialist develops to remove radon from your home and keep it out. Your foundation type will also affect your radon mitigation system cost, as unfinished basements will cost about $4,600 to seal and ventilate, while crawl spaces without a foundation slab may need extra encapsulation, costing $1,500 to $15,000.

Yes, radon testing is absolutely necessary if you suspect the presence of this hazardous gas, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing for all homes in the country. Radon is a pervasive natural gas that can leak through your home’s foundation and seep into the living areas. Unfortunately, the gas is highly carcinogenic and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon testing is crucial for keeping you and your family safe from harm, so hire a radon mitigation specialist to test your home if you suspect its presence in your home.

In most states, radon testing companies don’t need to be licensed or certified by the state, but the companies that analyze the test results and develop radon mitigation protocols do. You should choose a radon testing company that suits your needs, but before hiring a mitigation specialist, check our state licensing tool to make sure the company is properly certified.
