Paul came up with a great plan and walked us through all the options. Every step was professionally taken care of. We had many changes along the way and each change was met with ease and flexibility. While most homeowners aren't required to tell their neighbors that they’re putting up a fence, it's certainly a good idea to do so. Not only is it considerate to give neighbors a heads up about construction noise, but building a fence may limit your neighbors' access to their own backyards while building is taking place. 

The distance between fence posts depends on the type of fence you’re installing. Wood and metal fence posts should be between 5 feet and 8 feet apart. Chain-link fence posts can be closer together at 4 feet apart, or the spacing can be up to 10 feet apart. Vinyl fence posts can be between 6 feet and 8 feet apart, and wire fence posts can be up to 12 feet apart.

It depends on the side of the property the fence falls on when determining if you or your neighbor share the responsibility for the fence repair. However, many fences run along the property line, which means you and your neighbor share the fence, and you’re both responsible for repairs and can likely split the costs.

The depth of the fence posts depends on the height of your fence. If you’re installing a 6-foot fence, then digging 2-foot-deep holes for the fence posts will help ensure a secure installation. However, if you’re installing an 8-foot fence, the posts will need to be deeper than 2 feet to support the structure properly. Also, consider how far apart the fence posts should be to provide adequate support.

Lattice should not touch the ground, as it creates a possibility for rot and a termite infestation. It’s best to leave a gap of 3 or 4 inches at the bottom for airflow and to keep the wood dry. You can add stones, bricks, or other decorative pieces to conceal the bottom of the lattice if desired.
