"I wish I could give Cotton Tree Service more than five stars. They have removed 5 trees from our property on two separate occasions. Four were over 30 feet tall. All the trees were removed carefully and professionally with heavy equipment and yet our lawn was not damaged. The hard working crew was very polite, professional and knowledgeable. The owner Tom was on site to operate the large crane and his skill was amazing to watch. There will be more tree removal in our future and Cotton Tree Service will be the only one we will call. State and local laws vary, but in most cases, you are allowed to trim any branches from your neighbor's tree that cross your property line. However, it's important to ensure you do not damage the overall health of the tree in the process. Removing branches incorrectly can jeopardize the health of the tree and could lead to you being on the hook to replace it.

It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. In fact, it’s a good idea to use geography to identify wood and determine which types of trees are in your yard. 

Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!

If it’s your property, then you can plant a tree near power lines, but it’s not the best idea. Any vegetation that grows within 10 feet or so of power lines will fall under the responsibility of the utility company, and they may trim or remove it as necessary. If you do move forward with your plan, try to choose a smaller ornamental tree, plant it as far away from the power lines as you can, and keep it trimmed to avoid future problems.

Steer clear of the area and contact your utility company immediately. It will have a website portal and/or a phone number to report downed trees and electrical issues. If the tree appears to be on public land, you may want to call your local government and report the issue there, too.

Whether tree roots will regrow after the tree has been cut down depends on the species. Some eventually tree roots die, as they lack photosynthesis; however, others can resprout from the roots and even produce new growth for up to seven years or more, if they belong to a species that reproduces through root sprouts.
