"I had bought a new heating system after mine died, and thought I was going to remove the old one and install the new one myself. Once I started the job, I realized I was in over my head, and thought that if I tried to hire someone to finish the job, that they would "rake me over the coals" so to speak. Two places tried just that, but NOT Dave LeBlanc. He was very thorough, friendly and not criticle of me for trying to do the job myself. He simply offered the best price to finish the job. He had to take more time than he estimated, but stuck firm to his price. A+ You should use him!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You will only need to refill your AC with refrigerant if it has a leak. Otherwise, a modern, well-maintained AC will most likely never need a recharge. You may notice a leak in an older system if your bills are higher, you hear a hissing sound, or if the air is blowing out hot.

A dirty air conditioning coil can cause your unit to work overtime, leading to reduced efficiency, higher energy use, more wear and tear, and possible ice buildup. If the coils corrode, refrigerant can leak, causing damage, possible mold growth, and an expensive repair bill. By cleaning your AC coils once a year, you’ll have a more efficient unit that’s likely to last longer.

It depends on how fast an HVAC technician can resolve the issue. First, if there's a refrigerant leak, you’ll want to keep small children and pets out of the house. Next, you’ll want to turn off the AC unit to ensure no more freon enters your home. Finally, you’ll need an AC technician pro to come to your home and fix the leak immediately. Ultimately, it’s best to leave your home if you discover a freon leak—the risk of exposure is very high, and it’s not worth risking your health to stay.

The best way to save money on HVAC repairs is by regularly having your system inspected and maintained. This can prevent bigger problems and costly repairs and replacements in the future. It’s also smart to buy quality equipment and hire companies that provide warranties on equipment and labor. If you need repairs, you may be able to save money by cashing in on rebates and incentives or keeping the area around your HVAC unit clear to shorten the time your contractor needs to spend in your home.

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.
