"Last summer, I hired Roger to replace two skylights as well as a double hung window. I was very pleased with the end result. Not only was the job done well, but the guys that completed the work were courteous and worked diligently to get the job done. Fast forward 7 monthsâ ¦I noticed random shingles in the yard. Turns out the ridge cap had several holes and, of course, the forecast called for heavy rain later that evening. After calling at least 5-6 roofers/contractors in my immediate area (who either promised a call back, or didnâ t pick up), I remembered Roger. He responded immediately and said that if I couldnâ t find anyone, heâ d be over later that night. Roger showed up around 8pm and worked on the roof, in the dark, for over 2 hours to repair the ridge caps. I really donâ t know when this man sleeps! His rates are fair, he's responsive and he SHOWS UP (something that is getting harder to find in this day and age). I have several other projects that need to be completed in the future and I plan on calling Roger and his team. I would most definitely recommend them to family and friends."
"Hired to replace 4 old basement windows. Barry responded quickly & gave quote on the spot. His guys (3) promptly came & installed my new windows. Complicated job requiring Jack hammering through concrete. Very pleased with his service. He is a true professional, good communication skills with many years in the business. Highly recommend."

". We had a hard time finding a roofer on Cape Cod through Angie's List. It seemed that most providers were from off the Cape. I found Kent Persson through Service Magic and was hesitant to use someone no preapproved through Angie's List but decided to take my chances based on his prompt estimate and professionalism. I was not disappointed. As promised Kent and his team arrived at my house as soon as weather permitted and worked tirelessly to complete my roof while the weather held up. I was unable to be at the Cape while Kent was working but saw the job midway through the process and then when it was finished. The roof looks great and almost as importantly, there was no sign of it having been done, i.e. nails, trash, old shingles left on the property. I recommend Persson Construction wholeheartedly."
"SeaBreeze was Great! - They were very responsive right from the beginning and kept me informed along the way. The completed roof looks awesome. Even with snow - The job was completed in a timely fashion.. Would definitely use them again."
"This went great! Fay and Bert run a family painting business, but also perform their work to a very high quality. You notice that they take a lot of pride in their work, which is something I value. We had just remodeled our living room and it contained a very large amount of molding, trim, columns, and an elaborate custom fireplace surround. The work was left unpainted on purpose because we wanted to get a highly skilled and experienced painter to really do nice job on all of the intricate work. They were able to get the job scheduled and completed by the end of June which was a big deadline for us. They came buy to assess the job and offer a quote in early June. They use high quality materials and work fast. They offered advice where necessary and stuck to the original plan/scope of the project. I really appreciate this as well. They were very professional, cleaned up well, and also friendly and polite. I would definitely use them again for other projects and I highly recommend them to you as well! "
"Company did a good job last summer with 3 bay windows, so I called them back when the rest of the windows in the house needed to be replaced. On the initial visit, I told the rep that I wanted the same windows as last year. He quickly found the job order and picked up the details of the window make/model/etc without any need for me to reinvent the order. The company had the opportunity to try to upsell me, as I asked them about replacement of the skylight in the bathroom. Refreshingly, they declined to do so and told me that it would be much better to wait until we needed to get the roof re-done, and to do the window at that time. As before, the first guy clearly explained the process: guy 1 to take the order and measure the windows, later follow-up visit from guy 2 to remeasure all the windows carefully before ordering their construction, and then a couple of months later, a follow-up call from their HQ to schedule the install. He gave me an approximate window for this scheduling call. It was a pretty broad time-frame because there had been an unusually large number of people needing custom windows. As before, everything went off exactly as the rep indicated. The install team showed up within a half-hour of the estimated time, and installed 11 windows without taking a break. They removed every scrap of rubbish, vacuumed thoroughly, and left the place as clean as it was when they arrived."
When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.
Pros of installing a skylight include the fact that you will get much more natural light in your home, skylights can make your room look bigger than it actually is, and your home may increase in value. Cons include difficult upkeep (you may have to get on a ladder to clean and maintain them), higher installation costs, and, potentially, too much heat gain from all the extra sunlight.
Skylights are the most likely windows to leak if installed improperly, so there are a few questions you should ask any skylight installer before you hire them:
Do you specialize in skylight installation or only windows in general?
Do you offer any kind of warranty for the installation?
What recourse do I have if the skylight leaks shortly after installation?
Do you have references I can speak with?
How long have you been in business?
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.
While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.
