"Fixed a difficult problem with my Fridge. Unable to complete the job on the first day, but came back a couple days later to complete the job. Was able to localize a plug in the line that holds the Freon. Although difficult, he was determined to fix this problem. This guy knows his stuff. And he came initially on Saturday eve from Cape Cod to Somerville! How many appliance repair people will do that? Given the supply chain issues going on across the USA, this is not a good time to buy a fridge. He saved me from buying a fridge. I highly recommend him for any appliance repair."

"Extremely friendly service. Prompt and professional. It was a little more expensive than I thought it would be to swap out a light/exhaust fan, but the work was excellent and I would hire again in the future."

Small jobs welcome

"Josh was the first to respond on Angies list and came right out to check out the job. I was on a time crunch to get it done so he was able to squeeze me in that week. Showed up right on time ready to go. Did a great job and cleaned up afterwards. I plan on using Josh for future projects!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To keep your air conditioner in good working condition, you should have it serviced by a professional at least once per year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. If your AC unit is 10 years or older, consider servicing it twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to catch potential problems early and help it reach its full lifespan. During a service visit, a technician will inspect, clean, and replace parts as needed. Regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs. As a DIY task, you can also clean the evaporator coils annually.

To reset your air conditioner, start by turning it off at the thermostat. Then, shut off power to the AC system at the circuit breaker. Some units have a dedicated "reset" button; if yours does, press and hold it for three to five seconds. If your air conditioner doesn't have a reset button, or if you are resetting it after a power outage, leave the circuit breaker off for at least 30 minutes to allow the system to reset itself. Afterward, turn the power back on at the breaker, turn on the AC from the thermostat, and set it to "cool" to test the system.

Yes, having mismatched evaporator and condenser coils in your AC system can lead to serious issues. For instance, it can result in higher monthly energy costs as the system runs longer to compensate for the mismatch. This mismatch can also put extra stress on the system, compromising its efficiency and longevity.

Along with that, mismatched coils can lead to higher temperatures and humidity levels in the home. What’s more, using coils of different sizes may violate the manufacturer's warranty, as they are designed to work synergistically, and any mismatch could lead to repairs and system failure.

Yes, mini split systems cool equally as well as central air. While a central system circulates air throughout the entire home at the same temperature, a mini split system allows each room to be cooled or heated at different temperatures based on your own preferences. Hire a HVAC professional to determine which type of system is best for your home.

The cost to replace an AC unit averages around $5,900, with a typical range between $3,900 and $8,020. The final price depends on several factors, including the type and size of the air conditioner, its efficiency rating, your geographic region, and labor costs for installation. Smaller units like portable and window ACs are much less expensive, costing between $90 and $550, compared to central or ductless systems. If your current unit is less than 10 years old, repairing it may be more cost-effective than a full replacement.
