"Carlos did a magnificent job! He is so polite and hardworking. Aside from being an excellent carpenter, he supports and works with his talented staff. He arrived on time and worked late to finish the job. I have no complaints about Carlos. He did an A plus job. I plan on using him for future projects as he is reliable and does great work!"

"This company had quick response, was able to do repairs for my elderly parents at last minute notice. Friendly quality service. I requested quotes from another company and was stood up. By the time the other company responded Phil had arranged for the Job to get done! My parents Deck repair is completed. Now that’s service!! I already requested for another estimate on more work needed. Give them the details of what you expect and let them do the work!"

"I have hired DRCR many times over the last 5+ years. I live in a 50 year old house and nothing is level or true, but you would not know this based on their craftsmanship. Below is a summary of the projects that DRCR has completed for me: 1) Total Upper Level Bathroom Renovation 2) Renovated Lover Level 1/2 Bath into a Full bathroom, including new enclosure, tub, vanity, toilet, plumbing, vanity, tile floor, baseboard heating register and expanding power and lighting 3) Added a 4th bedroom 4) Installed an above the ceiling beam and created one large Great Room from individual kitchen, dining room, and living room. 5) Added new cabinets, island, refrigerator cubby, lighting, and power to kitchen 6) Added shiplap, custom built mantle. and baseboard heat registers to Great room 7) installed new floor planks to upper level 8) Hung 11 paneled doors 9) Installed yard fence and deck gate 10) Renovated shed including a new single roof to match house and garage 11) Demoed and Rebuilt my Laundry room due to water leak damage I would not have hired DRCR repeatedly over the last 5+ years if I was not totally satisfied with their great value and superior quality of work. Please contact DRCR for my contact info to arrange a tour of my various projects."

"All work was outdoors. I waited for sun, rain and so far the little snow we have had to rate as excellent. They also came up with a novel way of solving an outdoor water flow problem. Service: a little problem in getting timing to mesh."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

Any wood deck provides some ventilation to the area below, as is the nature of that type of deck design. However, areas that experience excessive humidity and associated moisture benefit greatly from a dedicated ventilation system in the form of strip vents. This addition helps the various wood boards contract and expand evenly throughout the years and reduces the chances of twisting, warping, and buckling.

Composite decking might cost more upfront, but it delivers value in terms of durability. Unlike wood, composite material resists common deck problems such as rotting, fading, warping, and all the other things you don’t want a deck to do. The extra processes lead to a higher price tag, but you’ll save big in maintenance costs down the road.

Although composite decking is extremely durable, it’s also susceptible to extreme heat. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading, warping, and cracking. Composite also retains heat more than wood, which makes it dangerous to walk on in the summer. You can help prevent heat damage by only building with composite in shaded areas or using rugs to cover the hottest spots.
