"The project went extremely well. Gaby is a consummate craftsman and finish carpenter. As someone who built custom furniture in my early days, I am very familiar with woodworking and can immediately distinguish between good, quality work and Excellent craftsmanship. Gaby fits the latter! He does all the work himself and takes incredible pride in the quality of his work. He built out the shelving in our pantry and when completed, there was an issue with the height of each of the shelves. When I brought the issue to his attention, Gaby apologized profusely and was back at my house within 48 hours to remedy the situation. This is a situation where you get what you pay for! His pricing was a bit high but fair as custom-built cabinets go. The difference is justified in the quality of materials he uses and the attention to every little detail during installation. During COVID, we paid 50% up front so he could purchase the materials right away as the cost of aLL MATERIALS CONTINUED TO SOAR. Gaby is honest, friendly, highly skilled and fin to work with. The only criticism I have is every decision made and agreement made was on a handshake (Old-school). There was not a formal quote or any paperwork other than the drawings from our designer that I provided. He gave me a range on price and of course, when the work was done, it was the higher of the range. We had initially planned for 2 pantries built by Gaby but ended up only needing shelves in a modified pantry that had already existed which my builder had modified. There were no adjustments in his verbal quote or final price. I had wished at the time that it was in writing. Good communication. Always on time and said what he would do and did what he said! Always cleaned up and left the work space ready and clean for the next guy. I would be happy to speak with anyone or send photos of before and after. You can reach me at [email protected]. Great work Gaby! Thank you."

"Mr. Phalan arrived on time, did the work as agreed, cleaned up immaculately and generally acted with high professionalism. We have employed him for years off and on in a variety of capacities. Small jobs welcome

"Twombly Home Improvement has done many projects for me; Remodeled a bathroom, erected a gazebo from scratch, repaired a collapsed roof, did wood rot repair around window sills and foundation, did some painting, and other work. Stephen provides great attention to detail, his estimates and final work costs are extremely competitive, he truly cares about his work and most importantly, he is very trustworthy."

"Had major remodeling done on the bedrooms, hallways, and a complete renovation of our bathroom. All work was completed on time. I've had this company return to do other work in my home and have recommended him to several family and friends and all have been completely satisfied with his work, ethics, and how completely knowledgeable he is with all categories of construction. Very reliable and fair with pricing."

"The company did a great job preparing and painting my deck. I thought I needed to replace the deck steps and they told me that was unnecessary because the step integrity was fine. They were enthusiastic about their work, on time, and wanted to be sure I was happy with the result. I will use the company again."

"Quick response, called and came out right away to help. Very professional and friendly. It was a small job, but still seemed important and I appreciated that. It was all done very quickly but professionally. I would hire again for any other handyman services I might need."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

Many people, including professionals in the field, use baluster and spindle interchangeably to describe the vertical components of a railing (or technically, a balustrade). However, there are subtle or distinct differences, depending on who you ask. The most common interpretation is that spindles are thin or delicate versions of balusters.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

No, you do not usually tip a carpenter for their work. However, if you’ve been very happy with the level of service and quality of work, a 10% to 20% tip would likely be accepted with thanks. If you’re not sure, it can help to discuss the carpenter’s policy or preference for tipping before beginning the project.
