"Jeremy just completed repairing the shoulders of our chimney replacing the existing brick with bluestone caps. His attention to detail was exceptional and he is truly great at his craft. He arrived when he said he would, charged what he quoted and the left the site as it was before he showed up. Can't ask for anything more than that."

Always have trucks ready to go. We do not use Sub Contractors, Owner at every Job. The cost is determined by Job. No travel charges. Free Estimates.

"Slow to get started but we were pleased John promised to return and backup his work if problems occurred. Roofing materials started coming off within 4 weeks and many promises were made to return promptly. Several appts for specific times came and went without seeing John. We asked many times to resolve our issue amicably and they stopped communicating. We had to file with BBB and small complaint court. BBB reports no response and court date is upcoming. Very disappointed..."

Higgins Energy Alternatives is one of the oldest and largest fireplace shops in the United States. A family owned and operated business started in 1975 by Ron & Sue Higgins, we originally opened as an antique store which diversified into wood stoves during the energy crisis of 1979. Over the years, we have grown along with our product line, expanding several times from our original barn on Summer Street to our present location at 140 Worcester Road (Rte 122) in Barre, Massachusetts. From sales to service, our staff has literally decades of experience in every aspect of self-reliant home heating, whether your choice is wood, coal, gas or wood pellets. Several of our employees have been with us for over 20 years. Although we have grown and expanded in order to better service our customers, we remain located in a small town with a friendly country atmosphere, where our top priority is customer goodwill and satisfaction. At Higgins Energy, you can rely upon our experience and reputation, along with our commitment to professional associations and the long history of industry awards and accolades which we have earned over the years. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to earn your trust.

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

While you technically can add a roof over shakes or shingles, it’s not a good idea. Roofing over existing roofing creates a moisture barrier underneath the new roof and since the trapped material is wood, you can expect a moisture problem. While you could get away with installing a new roof over asphalt or steel, wooden roofs should be removed, new underlayment installed, and the new roof installed over that. Also, the extra weight would add strain to your roof structure.

Yes, in most cases, you can add dormers to an existing roof. However, you should always work with a local general contractor when considering this structural change. These pros will bring in structural engineers and expert roofers to ensure it's the best match for your roof's style and stability.

Roofs last about 20 to 50 years, depending on the material, quality of installation, level of maintenance, and local climate. An asphalt shingle roof tends not to last as long, about 20 years, while a metal, slate, or tile roof may last over 50 years with proper care. Many roofs last an average of 25 years.

Re-roofing is the process of placing a layer of shingles over top of existing shingles, rather than pulling out those shingles and replacing them. Compared to a full roof replacement, re-roofing typically costs less and requires less labor and time. It's not an option for everyone, though. You may need a full roof replacement if your roof already has more than one layer of shingles. A full replacement may also be necessary if your roof has extensive damage.

While there are many benefits to installing a metal roof on your home, there are some downsides, too. Zinc roofs, in particular, are susceptible to corrosion from overly salty air directly near coastal areas. Another potential downside of zinc roofing is that it must be allowed to expand and contract with the weather. This means special attention is necessary to how it's fastened to the home to avoid issues.
