"Do NOT use Surgi’s AC (Southern Air)!! They are crooks and totally wasted my time and I’m still waiting for them to refund my money. Eddie gave me a quote to move my condenser, $3763 but I could get a $513 “discount” for getting a membership with them ($239 for 2 AC PM’s a year) which came out to $3249. So I paid $239 to get membership and then they send a new quote and voila! No discount. They also charged me $89 for “service call” to come give me estimate to do work which they didn’t tell me about when I called. (My unit wasn’t broken, I just wanted it relocated in my yard.) Then no one will return my calls for two days!!! I finally got through to a manager (“we do honor our quotes, we just had a glitch in the system”) and I should be getting a refund after almost a week and half a dozen unanswered calls. Stay away!"

However, many HVAC pros swear by the “5,000 rule.” If the estimated cost of your repair multiplied by the unit’s age is more than $5,000, it’s time to replace it.

It depends on the number of zones and rooms and how sophisticated the system is. On the low end, a ductless AC system costs $2,000 for one or two zones in one room. Covering two zones for more rooms can cost $6,000 to 8,000. If you want a larger ductless AC system to cover your entire home, multi-zone systems cost upwards of $13,000.

On average, the cost to repair an air conditioner hovers around $350, but it can cost anywhere between $130 to $3,000, depending on the type of air conditioner and the difficulty of the repair. Repairing an air conditioner yourself can still be costly, requiring specialty tools. Any repairs more complicated than replacing a filter are likely best left to the pros.
