"This contractor worked extremely hard to finish the job through extreme weather conditions to finish at a scheduled time much needed. For this I am very pleased. However, when they declared the job finished, I was not satisfied. They had installed a 100 feet of underground culvert which required removal and replacement of a section of a concrete driveway. All was complete except at the two ends of the culvert the backfill was already washing away due to the heavy rains and would continue to wash away. I argued that the job was not finished and that something needed to be done to finish the ends of the culvert backfill. I suggested covering with rock but they argued that was not part of the bid. I was communicating with my stepson, a very qualified contractor in another state, for advice. My contractor exclaimed that they were licensed in Louisiana and they new what they were doing. Ultimately Mr. Lenard asked me what would make me happy. I told him adding rock at the two ends of the culvert would make me extremely happy. He said youâ ve got it. They brought in the rock and finished the job. It added a minimal of extra cost to them but the job was then professionally finished. It looked right and the slope at the ends is now protected. It has now withstood the test of two rainstorms. After the rock was placed, the contractor new that adding rock was the right thing to due and so stated. They stated that they wondered why they had not thought of that up front. Ultimately, I am extremely pleased with the work and job done. I would not hesitate to recommend this contractor. I believe this contractor has learned that even more important than working hard to meet a deadline through difficult weather is the ultimate quality of the job and the ultimate customer satisfaction. To this end I am pleased with how the job turned out."

"They were very professional. Did everything I asked in a timely matter. I liked how Steve returned my calls. I love my new driveway and sidewalk, wish I had done it sooner instead of using rock all these years."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Your driveway contractor will probably recommend that you avoid driving on your new millings driveway for up to a week. Keeping pressure off the freshy applied millings will help the driveway to bind together. While the sun is helpful for binding millings, hotter weather can actually make the curing process take longer.

Asphalt, which is stone mixed with tar, is the most common material for outdoor basketball courts because it’s so sturdy and versatile. However, you don't have to use it: another option is polymeric rubber, which has shock pads that can prevent injury. This option is a little more expensive, ranging between $16 and $25 per square foot.

Materials used for indoor basketball courts, such as hardwoods, aren’t really an option outdoors.

You should not attempt to install your own driveway. Whether working with asphalt or pavement, this is a complicated project that requires special equipment. Talk to some nearby asphalt or paving professionals and discuss your particular needs—it’s a good idea to get a few quotes and look at the company’s past work.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.
