"We couldn't be happier with the job that Float N Coat did!!  Jason was extremely responsive to both calls and emails about various costs (additional doors, additional coats of paint, if needed, etc.) and more than forthcoming with any issues that may bump up our estimate. But the bottom line was there really was no reason to fear -- our final bill matched the estimate and there were no "hidden" or "additional" costs included when we got it. In addition, the work is absolutely beautiful! We have tons of trim, baseboards and deep set windows, and they did an amazingly accurate job with the white trim on our very dark walls. Their wall prep work (patching, sanding, etc.) was so impeccable you can not tell where the holes had been previously. They were on time, cordial and really knew what they were doing. And lastly, when they were done, the smell of fresh paint was the only thing left behind. This was a pretty big residential job, and they cleaned up so well, it was as if they were never there.
As a client, I felt included in every step of this huge project, and that is a rare feeling when working with service companies. I've recommended Float N Coat to friends already, and highly recommend them here. If you are looking for professional painters who deliver high quality work at an affordable price, you don't need to look any further.  "

"Had to file a claim for new clothes dryer, and repairs on fridge. Foothills Star Appliance came to look at both. Eric was the repairman. He was friendly, answered all my questions, and very professional. I would highly recommend his company."

"Apex Painting & Remodeling was actually brought in as a subcontractor because of my desire for a built-in bookcase that my potential painter could not do.  He gave me his bid, which encompassed the whole job, to paint my den, formal living room and dining room and to build a custom recessed book shelf to match one on the other side of my fireplace.  It was higher by several hundred dollars than the painter who brought him in, but I just felt he would do a better job for me and I was right.  While I knew the first guy was getting half of the pay, he rarely was on the job and when he was, he rarely did any work.  My children called him "the lazy one".   But I was so thankful he brought Apex in to "help" with my house!   I provided the materials and the owner/operator of Apex, Mr. Roberts provided the skill and labor.  I wanted to see the quality of  the work before I hired Apex for my entire project.  I have just purchased an older home that needs updating. The den was dark paneling which either had to be removed and replaced with sheet rock or floated and painted over.  I chose to have the paneling painted over to save on costs.  Mr. Roberts prepped, primed and painted the walls.  I also had him put up a chair rail and he brought and installed baseboards around the entire den, as we noticed there were none in the room. At first I just wanted to paint the room one color, but then changed my mind and added the chair rail and one color on bottom, one on top and of course a trim color.  This did not faze Mr. Roberts at all, he was happy to accommodate me. I also chose a semi-gloss, but after two coats of semi-gloss was applied, I was not thrilled with the look, so he suggested one coat of flat, which is what we did, only he felt it needed two coats of flat for excellent coverage & that is what he did.  No Complaints.  I decided to add crown molding in my formal rooms with the corner blocks, only I did not like the corner blocks at the store, so he customized them exactly as I wanted.  My rooms are painted beautifully with no overlaps or drips.  He deglazed and sanded my trim twice before enameling, so it does not scratch off.  I know, he had me try to scratch the surface!   Also, no trim paint on the wall, no wall paint on the trim!  The built-in bookcase proved to be more than Mr. Roberts bargained for due to the structure of the house, but he did a wonderful job.  In fact, another contractor was over yesterday and asked what finish my bookcase had been before.  He was surprised when I told him they were newly built and had always been just as they are. I would certainly hire Apex Painting and Remodeling again.  In fact, I have.  He is going to help me with the rest of my home.  I am so pleased that Mr. Roberts took the time to do the job right and paid attention to details.  He could have easily taken advantage of me, as my husband recently passed away, and I am a little lost when it comes to things around the house.    To be honest, I was overwhelmed with the task before me, but Apex came in, calmed me down and took care of it.  I like that Mr. Roberts usually works alone, so he can control the quality of the work.  He will explain what he is doing and why, if you want him to, otherwise, he is very quiet.  And he does not mind if you watch him work.  I would highly recommend Mr. Roberts at Apex Painting & Remodeling, in fact I have already given his card to several friends."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

You can paint over drywall mud about 24 hours after application, but the exact timing depends on factors like humidity, temperature, and the thickness of the mud. For the best results, ensure the mud is completely dry to the touch and has changed from a darker gray to a lighter, chalky white. Don’t forget to sand and prime the drywall surface before you paint to create a smooth, even finish.

All plaster walls will crack over time due to normal house settling and expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes. Small, thin hairline cracks are generally not serious and are mostly a cosmetic issue. However, larger or more significant cracks can indicate structural problems.

Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Cosmetic Cracks: Cracks that are 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner are typically cosmetic.

  • Structural Cracks: Cracks wider than 0.5 cm, excessive or deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, or cracks that span around corners can signify a structural or foundation issue. Cracks along the joints where walls meet the ceiling also warrant attention.

For cracks wider than 0.5 cm, structural repair is needed. If a crack is 2.5 cm (1 inch) or wider, or if you notice any signs of a structural problem, it is best to contact a plaster repair professional to assess the damage.

Knowing what causes drywall damage can help stop it before it starts. Here are some of the most common causes of drywall damage:

  • Water damage from roof leaks or leaky pipes.

  • Small holes caused by doorknobs, minor accidents, and rodent infestations.

  • Wall dents stemming from moving furniture and minor accidents.

  • Wall cracks that form from a settling foundation or seismic activity.

  • Nail pops from nails and screws in the walls.

  • Large holes that are caused by accidents with heavy objects, children and pets, or sporting equipment.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.
