"I was originally expecting a plumbing leak because I had leaking under the bathroom at my first story ceiling. Plumber came out and said it was a roof leak. My house is only 4 years old, so I was concerned. I called Helton and even before they came out, they explained some common causes of roof leaks in newer houses. They explained that flashing is often put together with caulk instead of welded together, and that they were welders by trade also, so they could do all of the work. They came out the day after I called and looked over the roof to determine the problem and give an estimate for free. At that time, they found that there were numerous nail holes in the roof and that the flashing had been put on backward. They said they could fix it for $250. I called back to have the work done within a few days, and again, they came right out the next day to do the work. On the day of, I realized they may also be the appropriate company to have repair our downspout that had come loose from the house and disconnected from itself in one spot due to the welding experience. I asked the day of if they could do that as well, and they added that on for an extra $50 without any hesitation. I wasn't home when they did the work, but I came home to find the downspout very securely fastened to the house in several spots and bolted together firmly at every joint, the way it should have been done initially by the builder! I was VERY pleased! We had a very heavy rain last night, and there is no leaking, so they appear to have done a great job with the roof as well!"

"The project was challenging. A shifting roof load caused an exterior log wall to bulge resulting in serious structural issues. What impressed me about Josiah Robey and Strong Construction was the firm s emphasis on quality repairs. He went the extra mile to diagnose the problems and resolve them. He takes the time to help the homeowner understand what he is doing and why. On time. On budget. Meets expectations. I would not hesitate to work with his company again."

"It was a very pleasant experience! I called one day and the owner Nick Jackson called me back that day. He came the next day ! Our roof had a small leak so he accessed my roof and noticed a lot of hail damage. At that Point he talked me through how to file a claim with my insurance company . Once the adjuster scheduled an appt to come out , Nick met with him and they both figured out what needed to be replaced. We received an insurance check shortly after that and Nick scheduled his crew. They were fast , professional and installed an excellent roof. It was a very easy painless operation. I would highly recommend them !"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Roof windows and skylights can be installed on various roof materials, but skylights are usually the only option that you have if you have a flat roof or a roof with a slope under 15 degrees. In these cases, roof windows have too high of a risk of leaking to be suitable options. The specific installation requirements may vary, so it's important to hire a window replacement contractor. Certain types of roofs may not be ideal if they limit the size of the window or if they pose an issue with rainwater collecting around the area.

Local window and door specialists, glaziers, and roofers should all install skylights. You can also do an internet search to find companies that specialize in skylight installation near you. Keep in mind that skylight installation is very complex and can be dangerous without the proper tools and safety precautions, so we don’t recommend this as a DIY project.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.
