"We had really bad windows in our home, so we set up an appointment with Brandon. He was so knowledgeable. We learned so much and were very confident in our choice to go with Universal Windows Direct. We got quotes from other companies, but the products just didnâ t compare. We had the installation scheduled right in the middle of the snow last month. We didnâ t know if they were going to come. The installers were right on time and did everything in one day. Six windows and a sliding door. They seriously are a great company."

Windows questions, answered by experts

When your double-hung window upper sash keeps falling down, it means you could be letting out warm air in the winter or cool air from the AC in the summer. That means your HVAC system works harder to warm or cool the house, costing you extra on electric bills.

If the lower sash continues to fall down, it means when you’ve popped open the window for fresh air, it could slam shut. In addition to being inconvenient, this could be dangerous if you have small kids, children, or pets that like to hang out by the window.

If your window well fills with water, first remove the water as soon as weather conditions allow, using a pump or wet/dry vacuum. If water has seeped into your basement, you may need to call a professional to assess the damage. Once the water has been pumped out of the well, check the drainage at the bottom of the well and clear out any blockages.

On average, hurricane windows last between 20 and 30 years. But some windows only last 10 years, while others can last 50 years or longer. Vinyl hurricane windows have a shorter lifespan than aluminum, so invest in high-quality hurricane windows and properly maintain them to get the most out of your investment.

To lower your home’s humidity level overnight, you can open your windows when the air is less damp. This tactic allows air to circulate around the window, preventing condensation from forming. However, you should consider the disadvantages of leaving your windows open overnight, including safety risks and pest intrusions.

Picture windows last about 20 to 50 years, depending on the material, your location, and how well you maintain the windows over the years. Materials like vinyl and aluminum may not last as long, while fiberglass can last many years. Wood will last decades if you keep up with maintenance. Homes in areas with harsh weather throughout the year may cause windows to have shorter lifespans.
