"I had these guys tear down and rebuild a column on my back porch, repair some missing brick and straighten out a short wall on the side of my driveway then they tuck pointed some areas that needed some TLC. Progress was a little slow at first, but they finished sooner than I expected and I’m satisfied with the job they did. The house is almost a hundred years old and they took care of it. You should place a layer of thick landscaping fabric directly over the concrete slab and then a thin layer of leveling sand over that to protect the pavers from moisture. For border pavers, you should plan on locking them in place with polyurethane adhesive. This will prevent them from shifting under foot traffic.

You’ll first need to install a base underneath your pavers for extra stability and drainage. Otherwise, the pavers can sink into the ground, and you’ll have to reinstall them. Use a base gravel layer of 4 to 6 inches for walkways and 10 to 12 inches for driveways. Compact your gravel layer every 2 to 4 inches so it’s nice and solid. After you install your gravel base, apply a 1-inch layer of sand on top.

Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time.
