It is less costly to paint than wallpaper when you only consider the upfront cost. Wallpaper costs $320 to $820 when applied by a pro, while paint only costs $200 to $700 per room. In most cases, you’ll need at least two coats of eggshell paint. This is a good rule of thumb to go by if you’re painting a wall or ceiling. Make sure each coat has ample time to dry before you apply the next one.

Newer paint cans often come with an “easy pour” spout with a twist lid. These can be tricky to open, but the key is to grip the spout cover with your fingers and twist it counter-clockwise. There should be a raised ridge in the middle to make it easy to grab. For more standard twist lids, you can try prying the lid off by turning it with your hands, as you would a jar, or running it under warm water.

You should wait for caulk to cure before painting it. Silicone and acrylic latex caulk can take anywhere from one to 10 days to fully cure, and polyurethane may take 10 to 12 days to cure. Always follow the instructions on the label when it comes to painting over caulk because different types require different drying and curing times.   

Wait at least 48 hours before taking a shower in your newly painted bathroom. Even if the paint feels dry to the touch, it needs time to fully cure and resist the high humidity from a hot shower. Keep the bathroom well-ventilated by running an exhaust fan or leaving a window open during the drying time and while showering.
