",After interviewing several well-known custom builders (several of whom advertise "custom homes on your lot") we were fortunate to have been given the name Potter House Group.  The President of Potter House Group met with us personally and we presented him with a situation that other custom builders who wanted to charge us up to 50% more than Potter House Group.
Our situation was that lightning struck our custom home and it had to be razed with the exception of the concrete foundation and garage floor. After an initial meeting to review our plans, site, special conditions and consideration for the level of input we desired, Lee calculated an estimate that was realistic, detailed and SIGNIFICANTLY less than the other big name builders we interviewed.
Rebuilding a new custom home in our Township involved a maze of obstacles and required significant expertise in dealing with permits, blueprints, township meetings, neighbors, rules and of course building inspections and sub-contractors.  Lee navigated all the obstacles with expertise and professionalism.
With the help of Potter House Group and its President, Lee M. Rickey, we moved into our home that met more than all of our requirements due to the knowledge and integrity of our builder.  No substandard materials or workmanship was allowed, the process was professionally monitored and we now have the home of our dreams without breaking the bank!
We highly recommend Potter House Group and Lee M. Rickey to anyone interested in honesty, timeliness, quality, professionalism and integrity. You cannot go wrong with Potter House Group and its owner Lee M. Rickey.

"We contracted Kentucky Home Improvement to work on our 1865 Italianate house; our projects included demolish and rebuild of a second floor deck with composite material, demolish and rebuild of an existing kitchen addition, modification a load bearing wall, and constructing a green roof on top of a detached garage. Mike Townsend and his crew were incredibly professional and friendly, and were able to finish our projects ahead of schedule; Mike was even willing to attend our meeting with the Historic Preservation Board when we presented our projects for approval. Our construction began after we purchased our home with a 203K loan; we were very pleased with the way Mike worked with us, and our mortgage broker, and HUD inspector to complete the process. Mike was always very prompt in responding to emails and texts and was open to any changes that we needed to make. He is reliable and starts when he says he is going to start. Even with a very cold winter, his crew was working non-stop to make sure our property was finished as quickly as possible. The crowning achievement with our relationship with Mike was the green roof. This engineering challenge required the removal of a gable roof on top of a detached 2-car garage, reinforcing the structure with steel I-beams, installing a drainage system, filling the space with soil and grass seed, building a pergola, building a horizontal privacy fence around the perimeter of the structure, building a bench, and adding electrical outlets. Mike turned what was originally a crazy idea, that turned into sketches and renderings, to reality and we are very pleased with the end result; this project added 250sqft of grass to an urban property that had none to begin with, and our dogs thoroughly enjoy having the extra green space. Mike also worked very well around any additional contractors that we needed to bring in (furnace went out unexpectedly and Duke had to upgrade our service and raise our service mast). Kentucky Home Improvement was certainly not the cheapest option, but the quality was well worth the price difference. We would highly recommend Mike Townsend to anyone looking for a contractor; our advice would be to make sure you have invested some time thinking through your plans, be open to professional opinion, and understand your budget."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Mid-century modern architecture was a popular home style throughout the U.S. from the 1950s to 1970s. Most homes feature a wide and symmetrical floor plan with low-sloped roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows. Its minimalism and balanced appearance are back on the home style scene, particularly when maximizing sunlight, airflow, and a blend with the home's natural surroundings.

Many architects offer 3D modeling and virtual walkthroughs, which allow clients to visualize the project and make informed decisions before construction begins.

Consulting the architect of your house is not the best way to determine when it was built. Many homes are built by developers or builders, so there may not be a specific architect to track down—especially if you have a very old house. Instead, it’s best to rely on local government records.

Depending on what the blueprints are for, a qualified draftsperson, contractor, or architect can draw them up. In some cases, including specialty permitting for a build, you may be required to use a licensed architect.

In many cases, a blueprint drawn up by a certified professional is required before a city or municipality approves a permit.

There are differences between universal design and ADA accommodations, but the outcomes are often similar. While universal design is a proactive process that takes a social justice approach to accessibility for all, ADA accommodations are focused specifically on accessibility for individuals living with disabilities. ADA accommodations often take the shape of wider doors and hallways, ramps, elevators, lower counters and sinks, and easy-to-grab door handles; universal design can include these plus emphasize better lighting, tractioned floors, and other building elements that allow all people to use buildings more comfortably.
